DESCENDANTS OF JOHN AND ANNIE FELLINGHAM by Eva Fellingham Howard, August 25, 1925

[page 1]

This Genealogy begins with the John and Annie Fellingham family and traced thru[through] the four generations up to, and including a part of the fifth generation.

The original copy of the Genealogy of John and Annie Fellingham family was dedicated to Eva Fellingham Howard by uncle Alfred Fellingham on June 14, 1904 and written up during that summer.  It contained the best information that we could gather of the Fellingham family which are scattered over various parts of the United States.

The original copy has been rewritten and enlarged upon with information secured from some of the older living members and descendants of the family, bringing forth, as nearly as possible, to secure the correct information of four generations and a part of the fifth generation.

This pamphlet is inscribed to one and all members of the Fellingham family.

Dated.    August 25, 1925

John Fellingham[, Jr.] was born in Suffolk Co., England, Aug. 1, 1786[ the son of John Fellingham and Frances Harrison].  Annie Johnson Fellingham, his wife, was born in Suffolk Co., England Feb. 13, 1791[ the daughter of Thomas Johnson, Sr. and Anne Noble].  They emigrated to America the later part of the year 1837 with a part of their family including John, Alfred and Emma.  This was the year Queen Victoria was crowned.  They settled six miles southeast of Utica, N. Y. on Frankfort Hills.

[ 1st and 2nd generation - emigration ]

William[1], oldest child of John and Annie Fellingham was born Feb. 16, 1810 in England.  He married Sarah Mills.  With their son, Ephriam (born 1832) they came to America.  They reached New York City latter part of March 1837.

George[ Samuel 1], son of John and Annie, was born in England July 7, 1812.  He was married in England to Emma Scroggins.  With their son, John (born 1836) they accompanied William and his wife to America.

Mary Ann[1], the third child of John and Annie, was born Jan. 23, 1815 in England.  She married John Thorndyke.  They came to America in May 1866.  Their children at that time, Emma and Syre[Syer] remained in England.  Emma is dead.  Syer married and had a family; particulars unknown.   Those children that accompanied them were Annie, Lettie, Walter, Fred, and Louisa.   In Oct. 1869, their son John and wife Maria and children, Amelia, Mary Ann, Ephriam, Alfred and a little girl named Annie (who died several days after reaching here) arrived in America.

Harriet[1], the fourth child of John and Annie, was born July 6, 1818, in England.  She married Samuel Ward.  They came to America between 1839 and 1840.  They had no family at this time.

The children of George Fellingham[1 and Emma] family born in N. Y. were George[ F], Mary, Anna, William, and Mattie.  George and his family, his father and mother, other brothers and sisters all lived on Frankfort Hills, near Utica, N.Y.   The first home was a log house but later a frame house was built which is still standing and well preserved.

When the Fellinghams moved on this farm it was owned by James Emery.  On Feb. 15, 1841 James Emery sold the land of about 88 A. to George [Samuel ]Fellingham.  Then on Dec. 21, 1844 the land was sold back to James Emery.

In the year of 1846, William, Ephriam, and George came west and settled in Kendall Co., Illinois.

Other members of the family including John, Alfred, Emma, with the father and mother, John and Annie, and the Ward family came from N. Y. in 1848, or in 1849, when the last families came here.

They resided in Kendall Co., Ill., until the year of 1851 when all of them settled in Grundy Co., within about two miles distant from one another.  The road separates Vienna and Mazon Townships.

Uncle William and George securing a quarter section in Vienna Twp. for $112.  This was paid for with $100 cash and value of a load of wheat.

Uncle Alfred and John had their quarter section of land in Mazon Twp. in the same section with uncle Samuel Ward.

When Samuel Ward lived in N. Y. Sate[State] he was a wood-cutter there.  Percilla, Ophelia and Flora were born there.  When they emigrated to Illinois with some of the other relatives[,] they came in wagons pulled by oxen.   When they moved on their land in Mazon Twp., they built a log cabin with a sod roof.  At this time land was bought at from $1.00 to $2.00 per acre.  Only two horses were in the country[county] at this time so the prairie was broken up with wooden plows drawn by oxen.  The same stream, "Thunder Creek" passed thru[through] the farm and deer came there to drink.  The nearest market was Chicago.

There were no schools nor churches but services were held in the homes and a number of years later[,] in 1864[,] the Baptist church was built on or near Bruce's corner on some of the Fellingham land.

It was uncle Samuel Ward that donated the land for the Ward Cemetery, and Emma Scroggins Fellingham, wife of George [Samuel ]Fellingham (my grandmother) [was] the first one buried there in 1852.

John and Annie Fellingham lived among the families of their children in Mazon Twp. until the dates of their deaths.

John died May 2, 1858.  Annie, his wife, died Jan. 29, 1866[.]  They rest in the Ward Cemetery.
