In Lookingglass, Oregon, where it never snows, 60 inches of snow fell
in January, 1969. Here's Jimmy with an icicle as tall as he was that formed on the
Thralls' house.

The caption reads: ON THE TRACK for the first time this season, Harold
Davis of Roseburg lips and "turtle" turns on the south end of the asphalt oval at the
Douglas County Fairgrounds. Just behind Davis in another mini-stocker is Jim Thrall (car
5R). Davis went out of the action. Thrall was out of the money. (News-Review Photo by

After being delivered to the site by helicopter, here's Jimmy
digging down through the snow to the roof hatch of a mountaintop transmitter
building to service the emergency generator. Not one of his favorite tasks!

Jimmy at an invitational at the Bonneville salt flats in 1987. Jimmy built
the car, a C Fuel Lakester with turbo Offy power, for owner/driver Nick Pappas at Rolla
Vollstedt's shop. The car was accelerating past 275 MPH toward the record of 320, when
something let go in the rear suspension and the car rolled 37 times.

At a Toyota victory banquet, it had been announced that a necktie would
be mandatory. Jimmy was not a suit-and-tie person, so he met the requirement with a rope
knotted 13 times.

Jimmy's turbo Cosworth Vega in 1989. It had a rear wing, full cage,
and large front spoiler. The hole in the hood was for the turbocharger exhaust.
Starting the car inside a parking garage would set off many car alarms. Under boost
at night, there would be a red flame in front of you arcing over the roof.
