The Gypsy Guerrilla Band plays a lively selection of traditional old time American, Irish, Scottish, and French instrumental melodies. Enjoy! Track 1-Devil in the Haystack/Old Mother Flanagan Reels-2:45 These two straight-on fiddle tunes in the mixolydian mode of A were transcribed by Bill Rintz, Hillsborough, Illinois, from fiddler Pappy Taylor, Effingham, Illinois. This medley was originally recorded on the audio cassette Ernie's Journey but the master tape fell apart. The Gypsy Guerrilla Band made a new recording of this and other popular tunes . Track 2-The Maiden Lane-1:40 This is a three part English country dance from the English Dancing Master, by John Playford and published in 1651. Track 3-Mist on the Meadow Jig Medley-2:45 "Mist on the Meadow", the first tune in this Em jig medley was transcribed by Bill Rintz from a recording of Eddie Rabbit's father who was an Irish fiddler, the title was found later in an Irish collection of music. The second tune is "Sunday is my Wedding Day" from 1000 Fiddle Tunes. This is a new recording from the audio cassette Ernie's Journey. Track 4-Billy Sullivan's Polka-1:45 County Clare, Ireland is said to have a tradition of polkas and this is one of them. Track 5-Chez la Mère Antoine-2:05 This tune proves a simple melody is sometimes the best Track 6-Teetotaler's Reel-2:05 Also know as the "Temperance Reel", is a new recording from the audio cassette Ernie's Journey. Track 7-Bourrée in Dm-J. Blanchard-1:45 This slow melody in 3/8 is from The Massif Central Tune Books, a highly recommended collection of French hurdy-gurdy and bagpipe melodies. Track 8-The Nutting Girl-2:15 Morris dancing is done with bells, ribbons, sticks, and lots of jumping. The Gypsy Guerrilla Band recorded this Morris dance without the "capers". Track 9-Les Cloches-J. Blanchard-2:00 "The Bells" is another French Massif melody. Track 10-Horse's Bransle-2:05 A "bransle" is one of the many Renaissance dances. Some transcriptions are in A major and use the G sharp. The Gypsy Guerrilla Band recorded this in the mixolydian mode of A, using the G natural instead. Track 11-Rory O'More Jig-1:53 Rory O'More was an Irishman famous for his part in the Irish Rebellion of 1641 in which the Catholic gentry fought the English and Scottish Protestants ultimately forming the Catholic Confederation of 1642. Track 12-The Gravel Walk Reel-3:20 Also known as "Gravel Walks", this reel has a certain, funky, sound at this pace. Track 13-Humours of Whiskey Jig Medley-2:50 The three Irish jigs in this new recording from the audio cassette Ernie Rides Again! are "Humours of Whiskey", "A Night at the Faire", and "Trip to Sligo". The "humours" and the "trip" are forms of dance...really. Track 14-Rota-(c) 1982 Sunshine Company-3:15 Jim Lillquist wrote this tune on the day Orion (wife Joyce's dog) passed away and was buried. The title is derived from the tarot card "The Wheel". "Rota" is a new recording from the audio cassette Ernie's Journey. Track 15-Mason's Apron Reel-2:20 This fiddle tune is in the key of A major and not normally played on a hammered dulcimer because of the high G sharp. Track 16-O'Keefe's Slide-1:55 A "slide" is a form of Irish dance played like a slow jig. Track 17-Grimstock-2:14 Grimstock, a playful jig, is an English country dance found in the first Playford edition. Track 18-Tam Lyn Reel-2:25 This tune, also spelled as "Tam Lin", is a popular reel in Am. The original Tam Lyn was a Child ballad concerning fairies and a mortal woman. Track 19-A Fair Wind-1:50 "A Fair Wind" is from the latest edition of the Breathnach series of Irish dance music. The Gypsy Guerrilla Band learned this tune quickly and even brought it to the "Queen's Birthday Celebration" at the Texas Renaissance Festival. Track 20-Musical Priest Reel-1:50 This fast reel is in screaming Bm, Yikes! Track 21-Atholl Highlanders Marching Jig-2:55 This is a famous, traditional Scottish marching jig in four parts and is a new recording from the audio cassette Ernie's Journey. Normally the tune is played on Scottish bagpipes. Track 22-Whiskey Before Breakfast Reel- 2:00 "We don't title 'em but we do play 'em" Track 23-Izruçanka-3:10 The Gypsy Guerrilla Band went to the Balkans for this one. Specifically, the Vlachs (Romani) are a people and not a nation. They have a hammered dulcimer that is strapped from the neck and hangs down to play while the player stands.
