ERNIE'S POT 'O GOLD II is the second compilation of Gypsy Guerrilla Band tunes from the cassettes ERNIE'S JOURNEY (EJ), ERNIE RIDES AGAIN! (ERA), ERNIE'S BREAKDOWN (EB), and ERNIE PLAYS FAIRE (EPF). All tunes are digitally mastered for Compact Disc. Enjoy! Ernie's Journey (EJ) is the first recording project of the Gypsy Guerrilla Band. Because of the high energy and enthusiasm evident on this tape, Ernie's Journey is still many people's favorite. The original members are Jim Lillquist (hammered dulcimer), Joyce Lillquist (chorded zither), Mark Dawson (guitar), and Rio Blue (dumbék). Guest guerrillas are David Ballard (tabor, firebird and dragon drum) and Todd Menton (whistle and bodhran). Ernie Rides Again! (ERA) adds a flute player to the band, Melanie Webster. This recording is unique as Melanie was with the band for that season only. We welcome back David Ballard as a guest guerrilla. Ernie's Breakdown (EB) is the Gypsy Guerrilla Band's "white album" and the favorite of our musician friends. We welcome Jim Hancock playing guitar and mandolin. Jim Lillquist plays the African kalimba on his tune, "Kenny's Penny". Guest guerrillas are Bob Bielefeld on fife, flute, bones and sax, Malcolm Smith on fiddle, Mark Dawson on bodhran, David Ballard on tabor, and John Mills doing bird whistles. Ernie Plays Faire (EPF) is the Gypsy Guerrilla Band's entry into the digital age. This project was done live and mixed direct to two track DAT. No over-dubs here but many, many takes, just ask Jim. Guest guerrillas this time are Bob Bielefeld on fife and Craig Broers on upright bass. The Music Haste/Kesh/Johnny's Gone to France (EB) "Haste to the Wedding" and the "Kesh Jig" are two of our most popular Irish jigs. "Johnny's Gone to France" is one of our fastest reels. -185 seconds- Run Down Boot (EJ) Jim learned this Illinois fiddle tune from Bill Rintz of Springfield, Illinois. Bill learned it by ear. -100 seconds- The Fairies' Well (EPF) O'Neill's Music of Ireland is a major source of written instrumental Irish music. The Gypsy Guerrilla Band found this old time gem on top of page 84 in the "Airs" section. -107 seconds - The Clay Pipe (EJ) The first three parts of this jig are found in the above named source book under the title "Monaghan's Jig". The fourth part was learned from Bob Bielefeld. Todd Menton plays the penny whistle. -178 seconds - Old Time Medley (ERA) "Saint Anne's Reel", "Sleigh Ride", and "Liberty" are the titles in this medley. "Sleigh Ride" is also known as "The Merry Blacksmith" or "Paddy on the Railway". -181 seconds - Valse fran Orsa (EPF) Jim learned the "Valse" from Malcolm Smith who learned it when he was in Sweden. The count is in Finnish, sort of. At least Jim got the "one" and "two" right. -172 seconds - Smoky Chimney Hornpipe (EB) Ahoy mates and shake those bones! Everyone loves a hornpipe and so do we. -94 seconds - Maggie Picking Cockles (EB) Maggie has another fast tune. Jim Lillquist calls this reel "our AC/DC tune" but Jim Hancock says that it is "really a DC/DA tune". Oh well, it's still from our "white album". -103 seconds - Florida (c)1985 Sunshine Company (ERA) "Florida" is a hammered dulcimer solo composed by Jim Lillquist. -101 seconds - Tamo da Leku (EPF) "Tamo da Leku" is a beautiful waltz from the Balkans. May they achieve peace. - 155 seconds- Cook in the Kitchen (EPF) This is a favorite 3-part Irish jig from O'Neill's Music of Ireland. Bill Rintz taught me to play the "F" natural used on bars 2 and 6 of the first section. This is a different take than the original. -121 seconds - Humors of Schull (EPF) The "Humors of Schull" (pronounced "skull") is an Irish reel in the key of fast. This is a different take than the one on Ernie Plays Faire. -150 seconds- Barrio Tramp (c)1986 Sunshine Company (EB) Jim Lillquist wrote this tune but Bob Bielefeld turned it into a great jazz piece by over-dubbing his "C" melody saxophone. -215 seconds - Colonel McBain (EPF) "Colonel McBain " is another fast reel in Em from O'Neill's Music of Ireland. In fact, it's so fast that this is the shortest tune on the disc. This, too, is a different take than the original on Ernie Plays Faire. -75 seconds - War Hent (EPF) The full title to this Breton tune is the "War Hent Kerrigouarc'h". A Breton tune means that it is from the Brittany area of France which has strong Celtic roots. This march was written to commemorate a war that never took place, which is the only kind of war the Gypsy Guerrilla Band will celebrate. I learned this tune from Larry Rone of Dallas, Texas. -170 seconds - Thomas Leixlip the Proud (EPF) This is a waltz attributed to Turlough O'Carolan that we found in O'Neill's Music of Ireland. Turlough O'Carolan was a famous blind Irish harpist who lived during the early 18th century and whose music has survived this far. -139 seconds - Princess Royal (EPF) The Gypsy Guerrilla Band created their own arrangement to another of Turlough O'Carolan's melodies. -174 seconds - Road to Sligo (EPF) The "Road" to Sligo, Ireland, must be downhill because this cart is moving! -108 seconds - Major Molle (EPF) Craig Broers and Bob Bielefeld join the Gypsy Guerrilla Band on this Scottish reel found in the Gow Collection of Scottish Dance Music. This is a different take than what's on Ernie Plays Faire. -115 seconds - Smoky House Reel (EJ) Another fast, straight-on Irish reel in Am with Todd Menton on bodhran. -122 seconds - Shamus O'Brien (ERA) Jim Lillquist learned this Illinois fiddle version of an Irish air from Bill Rintz, of Springfield, Illinois. Jim liked it so much that he played it all by himself using felt-tipped hammers. -120 seconds - Kenny's Penny (c)1983 Sunshine Company (EB) The African kalimba, also known as an mbira or thumb piano, is featured on this jazzy 12/8 tune written by Jim Lillquist for his brother, Ken Lillquist. -102 seconds - Listen to the Mockingbird (EB) Malcolm Smith plays the fiddle like no one else can on this old time tune. We want to thank John Mills for the bird whistles even though we took a few out on this mix. "Listen to the Mockingbird" is a late 1800's song set to a melody said to have been whistled by a boy in Cleveland. Ernie's Pot O' Gold II is dedicated to the memories of Kenneth Lillquist, Malcolm Smith, and my father, Ernie.
