The Massif Central Tune Book No. 1 is the source for all our tunes from this region. This style of music is traditionally performed with hurdy gurdys and bagpipes. The translation of Derriere Chez Nous is the "back of our house", really. 2. Swallowtail Jig 1:57 The GGB as is. 3. Rein Faire (Qu'il est doux de ne rein faire) Written by Vincent Leutreau 2:24 Another tune from Massif Central, France. 4. Coutie's Wedding 2:34 This Scottish wedding march is used as the bride's processional at any wedding that the GGB plays. At the pace the band sets this march will make for a fast walk up the aisle. 5. Planxty George Brabazon 2:27 Planxty George Brabazon was composed by Turlough O'Carolan, an Irish harper of the early eighteenth century. "Planxty" is the term for a harp melody written for a person. Our friend Spivey requested this tune. 6. 'A' Slip Jigs Medley 2:43 The Irish Girl and Light and Airy are Irish "slip jigs". The slip jig, being a lady's dance, has a pace a bit slower than the band plays it. The Irish Girl is found in O'Neill's Music of Ireland written in the Ionian mode of A using he G#). Jim did not have a high G# on the hammered dulcimer at the time he was learning The Irish Girl so he flattened the G# to a G, putting the tune into the mixolydian mode of D (like the tune Old Joe Clark). He learned about the modes from playing the mountain dulcimer. 7. Hag at the Churn 1:56 The mixolydian mode of G is featured here as a D/C jig. 8. Slow/Fast Jig (Port an Achreidh) 3:48 We call this tune the Slow/Fast Jig. The recording was done in three stages and put together as a medley. 9. Bouree in 'G' Written by J. Blanchard 3:22 3/8 is the time signature of this Massif Central "bouree". This bouree sounds like a waltz and yet, is not. 10. Ten Penny Bit 3:17 According to O'Neil's Music of Ireland the title of this Irish jig is The Three Little Drummers. All the musicians that we know call it the Ten Penny Bit. 11. Les Poules Huppees Written by Gilles Chabenat 3:33 The Crested Chicken or, as Jon Palmer calls it, "Chickens in Hoop Skirts", is another Massif Central tune. We learned this one in Dm from the book The Massif Central Tune Book No. 1. Many of our friends learned Le Poules in Em from attending folk music "sessions". 12. Galway Tom 3:48 Jim and Joyce play a five part jig laying fours over the threes and threes on top, or something like that... 13. Lady Kelly's Delight (Aoibhneas ils N Cheallaigh) 2:23 This slip jig moves. Jim found the "Delight" in book one of the Breathnach series, 14. Langstrom's Pony 2:57 Jim learned this tune by ear from Bruce Boyd, a fiddle player originally with Celtic Stone (a band featuring David Claus on the hammered dulcimer). Bruce spent a year with the GGB before ultimately moving on to Singapore where he has a wife and child. 15. "Not" a Polka 4:45 This Massif Central melody is titled Polka, but it's not a polka. This is one of Jim's favorite tunes. 16. Cock of the North 2:39 This is the theme song of the Scottish Highland Brigade. We have heard that the Brigade never lost a battle when this tune was played. 17. Fig for a Kiss 2:48 The Old Dutch Churn is the alternate title to this Irish slip jig. The Gypsy Guerrilla Band likes Fig for a Kiss. 18. Wild Mountain Thyme 2:17 This is a familiar Scottish vocal tune that is a beautiful instrumental melody as well. This is one of Jim's all time favorites. 19. Youp' Nanette 2:32 French again! We'll be back "One more time!" with Ernie's Adventures II.
