This one is a sentimental favorite of mine. An earlier experience (#4) made me think about doing an entire painting in earth tones, and having no central "characters" in it. This meant that I'd have to take a break from the gaudy maples. So, that was what I was thinking. Each leaf can clamor for attention, with no one getting the upper hand for long — a botanical paean to socialism! Too bad the leaves are all dead already! And what the hell, let's really get egalitarian — slip in some sticks and rocks. Actually the process of making this painting was so much fun that I'm tempted to call it a lyrical experience.

Detail This painting was the apotheosis (so far!) of all the gnarly, little details to which I may well be addicted. The veiny, oily, ripped, curled and rotting nature of this leaf about sums it up. |
