This one still makes me want to jump and shout, frankly. The face-down maple leaf, having fallen while still green, displays a jade that seems to border on the inorganic. But look for these when you're out there this fall, those of you lucky enough to live in a place where this is possible! They're there, and they're extraordinary. I was so impressed by this leaf that I had no choice but to do its portrait, in essence. No sharing of the stage this time around.

And yet... I have a sneaky suspicion that the supporting cast actually steals the show. The variety of textures and colors around the edge, and the way that the drama of the slanting light catches them rather than the relatively flat central leaf keeps me looking at the perimeter. You too?

Detail 1

There ain't much to see of this yellow leaf, except where it curves up and catches some brilliant, late afternoon sun. The shadow that it drops on the main leaf gives me a sharp sense that it may be the closest thing to me, an inch or two closer than anything else on the canvas.

Detail 2

I think water droplets are unfair. They're so overtly catchy. That said, these are nice ones — so delicate and transparent that they disappear if you step back from the painting a bit.
