This was the first painting in which I was enthused about leaves that had fallen face-down. Somehow, I'd spent my entire life unconscious of the subtle beauty of this phenomenon. So, the purple maple with deep red veins and the pale one with delineated cream, pink and gray gradients were the main inspiration. Among other things, I discovered two fun things that I pursued in subsequent paintings: One was the way each leaf afforded a separate color-study, resulting in what might be considered an overall riot of hues. The other was about the opposite, really — the darkened bed of gray-brown earthtones that allowed those colors to sit up and be noticed.

Detail

I love this dessicated, insignificant, little leaf, especially where it's curled to a point on the left. I look at this leaf a lot when I'm talking on the phone, and it makes me a better conversationalist. Well, not really, but it inspires me all over again.
