Duckweed... I was pretty tired of painting green ovals by the time this large painting was completed. In it, I was intrigued by trying to nail down stuff floating on water, and in working at a greatly enlarged scale. The long canvas was inspired by the perverse idea of using a panoramic format for something very near and frontal. This is probably the piece that best deserves the name "leafscape."


Detail

This maple leaf has some fascinating detail where the line of the water's surface meets its edge. The tip of its lobes dip down under the waterline; they've turned a necrotic black and even begun to bubble weirdly. There's also a faintly visible leaf beneath the red one that makes the duckweed there sit up more noticeably on the surface. It's one of those 3D moments...
