Sandy and I took a walk around a local pond one day in early October, 2000. It was one of those stunningly brilliant mid-autumn days, and it featured a passing hailstorm. The hail sat up on the ground as solid little cubes for a few minutes. This painting depicts the hail as it began to melt, still balled up higher than rain drops would have been.

Detail

Having looked at this painting for over two years now, I know the part that I like the best. It's this lifted maple leaf. I am really pleased with its luminous orangey-yellow curl. I also like the sinuous way it trails out as a bright red streamer to the left, leaving a deep shadow like a stain on the leaf below it.
