I wanted to see if this whole dead leaf fixation would really allow itself to be resolved through painting. This brash experiment was the first attempt. It's much looser than the ones that followed it. I was doing with two colors what I would later have rendered with six. As a result, it's the breeziest and lightest of the set. I'm of two minds regarding this. I look at it, and think "Ha! I wouldn't let myself get away with that anymore!" Almost at the same time, I feel its freshness, and think "I'd really like to loosen up like that again." It's a good dilemma to have.


Detail

I was not yet as interested in light and texture as I was to become. The first thing I wanted to investigate was line, and the sensual shapes that could be developed with these undulating, toothed leaves.
