Before I proceed with the quest, allow me to guide you first to other informative areas. If you need to know the basic mechanics of movement and battle used in this game, such instructions can be obtained in the Tavern. For general advice on character selection, weapons, armor and battle tactics, have a look at Rasputan’s Quest Manual, which can be found in the Castle. If you have not yet completed the first quest, you may wish to read my Gold Leaf Quest walkthrough, also found in the castle. Like this file, it is available either for online browsing or for download.
A word about the quest---This is a two-part quest, which some players refer to as The Chasm Crossing/Fitness Trial Quest. In this quest pair, you will encounter a complex type of pit crossing and make use of an item acquired earlier. And now, with the gold leaf securely in your pack, you’re ready to proceed.
The Chasm Crossing
Enter the Northwest Cavern and explore north to find the door with a sign which reads, The Chapter House of the Order of the Chasm. Inside, you will find three pits and a plate switch (silent message only). When you stand on the plate (see Plate #1 on the map) you will see a compass symbol on the floor with the number 9 on the east side and the number 11 on the south side. This clue means that the door you seek is 9 squares east and 11 south of this position. Move now to each of the three pits inside the Chapter House, and try to walk into them. You will be stopped and receive a message at each one. These rather cryptic clues tell you how to cross the chasm. Exit the Chapter House and go to the chasm door. Take one step south through the door, then follow the white path marked on this map. Once through the door, you will move east and south across the chasm until you are back on solid ground. You may also cross the chasm going the other way (east to west) by this path. You need only visit the Chapter House once. After that, you will be able to cross the chasm without repeating this leg of the journey. (See Note #1 at the end of this document).
The Fitness Trial
Now you will use the gold leaf acquired in the first quest to calm the Spirit of the Chasm and open the Path of Contemplation. After crossing the chasm, travel south and then east. Explore the area fully, rats and all. On the east side you will find another tree symbol when you face south. To calm the winds: Bump the "tree wall" and your gold leaf will disappear, opening a secret door. (If the leaf does not disappear, move north away from the spot and then move to it again). Pass through the secret door and move south as far as possible. At the #3 orange square on the map, you will get a message that the winds have calmed.
Return through the secret door and move north then east, into the area called the Acolytes of the Order of the Chasm. (See Note #2). Explore this area, moving toward the room of the Record Keeper. Inside the record keeper’s area, you will find a desk at the #2 orange square on the map. Read the message you see there. This opens the Path of Contemplation. Now move west again, through yet another secret door and then north along the Path of Contemplation. When you reach the north wall of the path, the chasm spirit will confront you and judge your fitness. If you are found fit, it will let you pass. If not, it will throw you into the chasm. If you have followed these instructions, you will pass. If you do not pass, look for the gold leaf in your inventory. If it still remains, you will need to repeat the calming of the winds. If you do not pass the chasm spirit and the gold leaf is not in your inventory, you need to return to the desk and see if you get a message there. Once you have passed the chasm spirit, the northern sections of the first level are open to you and you are ready for the next quest.
Where Do You Go from Here?
Here are a few hints. Explore the Northwest Cavern fully. In it are clues as to what to do next. As you go along, you’ll learn that you need the Old Key for the Sphere Quest and the Mineral Closet Key for the Hellish Bow Quest. Hmmm… Have you noticed orange square #4 at the bottom of this map? (You will not actually be able to get this item at this time, but at least you’ll know where to look when you’re ready).
Note #1
You may cross the chasm without having acquired the gold leaf, but as you cannot get past the chasm spirit, what's the point? The point is that sometimes quest order can be juggled, and if you become stuck while working on one quest, you can often work on a different one and come back later. For example, after placing the air and water spheres, you can quest for the hellish bow and then return for the fire sphere. The advantage to this is that you can enter the set fight for the last sphere with a good ranged weapon.
Note #2
As you enter the area of the acolytes, notice the two secret doors north of you. These doors are in Tigbreel's Quarters. You will not be allowed into these rooms (alive, that is) until you have passed the chasm spirit. Return and enter these doors after the spirit gives you the OK. Explore the entire area as it, too, contains clues you need to continue your adventure.
