OUR FIRST MEETING

Over two hundred people packed the room for our November 14 meeting, and another one hundred were unable to find parking! We got great coverage by the Peninsula Daily News and the Sequim Gazette.

As a result of that first meeting, we drafted our proposal (Go to
Mission Statement) the end result of which would amend Washington's state constitution.

We are very fortunate to have enlisted the seasoned experience of Jefferson County Assessor Jack Westerman in our fight. On November 29, Shelley Taylor and Assessor Westerman were interviewed by KONP 1450AM. They discussed the fact the current law does not consider the devastating effect to property owners as a result of the real estate boom and explained the need for a constitutional amendment that would give property owners
PREDICTABILITY.

This is a STATEWIDE issue requiring an amendment to Washington's Constitution. It will take all of us to make this happen.

Here is your opportunity to help keep you in your homes! Write letters to the editor of your local paper. Word of mouth is a powerful tool! Spread the word about this effort to all of your friends and family, especially those in other areas of the state, and urge them to do the same. Tell your friends and family this affects renters too; landlords simply pass the increased property taxes on to their tenants. Tell them since property tax valuations include commercial property as well as residential, it also affects small businesses struggling to survive.

The more emails, the better. (For instance, a husband and wife should each send separate emails.)

Strength in numbers. Time is of the essence.

We have momentum, but it is imperative we keep on top of this campaign.
Now is the time to address this issue - 2006 is an election year.

This could be a win win situation for all. Our proposal will allow homeowners to budget for the future. The state will still be able to value properties at current market value for new construction and sales. No programs will be affected: not schools, not fire, not police.

We can make this happen!
