Gradual Release of Responsibility
1. Indicates a progression from teacher modeling to shared reading and writing, to guided reading and writing in small groups and to sustained reading and writing. Figure 14.1 shows the gradual release of responsibility model of instruction developed by Pearson and Gallagher (1983), and Figure 14.2, inspired by Ritterskamp and Singleton (2001), shows the model applied to key aspects of a comprehensive literacy program.
