This long
awaited book is a landmark study by John Heath and Eugene Arima. These two
world authorities on traditional kayaks have created this 164 page, 9.5 x 9
inch, softcover book, with many black & white photos, drawings,
maps, glossary, bibliography and index. There are line drawings of 30 kayaks up
to 400 years old. It is a storehouse of information for recreational kayakers
and scholarly readers alike. Included are excellent articles by Greg Stamer on
the use of the Greenland paddle, two studies of kayaks in European museums by
Harvey Golden, and Hugh Collings, a piece by H. C. Petersen, a very nice
excerpt from one of John Brand’s Little Kayak Book series and a three
page narrative by a Greenland seal catcher caught out in a survival storm over
100 years ago.
Canadian ethnologist, Eugene Arima’s portion, covers the making and use of the
kayaks of the Arctic areas just west of Greenland. His vast knowledge as an
ethnohistorian is extensively displayed and he includes chapters on kayak
making, woodworking tools, skinning, regional variations and hunting.
John’s portion explains in depth, the evolution and construction of the Greenland kayak. He includes several pages from a 1767 description of Greenland technique.
Learn why the Greenland paddle is built the way it is. Enjoy more than 20 pages
of John’s excellent instructions of most of the Greenland rolls and braces. His
wonderful drawings and Vernon Doucette’s excellent photographs will delight the
student of Greenland technique.
The
Art matte paper to enhance how the photographs appear.
Acid free paper, which lasts much longer.
Top quality printing.

Greenland News!
Maligiaq Padilla won the overall 2004 Greenland National Kayaking Championship Competition for the 6th
time! These were held in Qaqortoq, Greenland July 12-19, 2005. We
were told that in 2002, upon his fourth victory (his third consecutive
victory), that they were so astounded and so pleased that they let him keep the
trophy. To win for a 6th time is truly a great honor. Winning was not easy.
There were many very skilled competitors again this year. Congratulations Maligiaq! The Lance Armstrong of Greenland! (Or is Mr. Armstrong, the Maligiaq of the USA?)
There is a rapidly growing interest in Greenland of their grandfather's
kayaking techniques. Every year more Greenlanders join the enthusiastic rebirth
of this ancient and ingenious technology. But, the Inuit are not alone. World
wide interest is blossoming at an exponential rate. Maligiaq and others are
being invited to demonstrate all over the world. His remarkable skill as an
athlete is complimented by his skill as a teacher and showman. See http://www.qajaqusa.org/ and other websites
for more info.

OUR NEWEST VIDEO
ROLLING WITH MALIGIAQ- Maligiaq Johnsen Padilla won the 1998 kayaking championship of Greenland at the age of 16. He is the youngest kayaker to ever win this honor. This videotape was made during Maligiaq's yearlong visit to the U.S.A in 1998/99. Here Maligiaq demonstrates most of the 30 capsizing maneuvers that are done in the annual Greenland championships. Many of them are shown from behind in order to follow the movement. He also explains various paddling strokes. Many of the rolls are shown as seen from underwater. This videotape is the culmination of many years of research in order to provide the clearest record of traditional kayaking survival maneuvers ever made. It is available in NTSC (for North American VCRs) and PAL (for European VCRs). Narrated in English. (For a review of this video click here) Time 36 Min. $30.00 U.S., plus $5.00 Shipping & Handling (overseas orders add $5.00 additional S&H). *
Sea Kayaker Magazine has also temporarily put on their web site a copy of an article about Maligiaq. It may be found at http://www.seakayakermag.com/2000/june2000/JuneHeath1.htm

AMPHIBIOUS MAN - In 1995 John Heath had the pleasure of watching this video being videotaped at the Greenland National Kayak Association's tenth anniversary celebration. This professionally made documentary was released in 1996. Director Ivars Silis and his crew captured the spirit of the championship and life in Greenland. The quality of this VHS tape (made from digital betacam videotape) is superb. Narrated in English. It is available in NTSC. (We can sell all of the other tapes in PAL format, but not this one. For the PAL version of this tape only, you need to e-mail the producer of the film, Ivars Silis in Greenland. Please copy {silis at the greennet.gl} to the address line of the e-mail, remove the spaces and the {, }'s and change the "at the" to @. So that it becomes a proper email address. If this is confusing, just email us at jheath1821@earthlink.net and we will send you the address.) Time 28 minutes. $30.00 U.S., Plus $5.00 Shipping & Handling USA (overseas orders add $5.00 additional S&H). *
GREENLANDERS AT KODIAK - The record of a 1989 kayaking exhibition at Kodiak, Alaska by John Peterson, then Champion Kayaker of Greenland. (He was Greenland National Champion a total of three years!) The clear water of a swimming pool reveals much of what takes place underwater. About 30 maneuvers are shown, including some shown in a bay near Kodiak. It is available in NTSC and PAL. Narrated in English. Time 38 minutes. $30.00 U.S., plus $5.00 Shipping & Handling (overseas orders add $5.00 additional S&H). *
In 1983 some young Greenlanders became concerned that their kayaking heritage would soon be lost unless something was done to preserve it. They formed a club and sought out veteran seal-catchers to train them to build and use kayaks. By 1984 they had become organized into a league called QAANNAT KATTUFFIAT, or the Greenland National Kayak Association, an organization of about 25 local clubs, consisting of about 1,000 members. It pleased John Heath very much to be able attend their first national conference and to keep in contact with them since that time. The video described below furnish an excellent view of Greenland kayaking technique.
QAJAQ KLUBBEN - This videotape was made, by some club members, at the first national training camp, on a fjord near Nuuk, in 1986. John Heath felt that it has much to offer. It shows how Greenland kayakers are trained to roll, first by building confidence through being capsized under safe conditions, with the objective being to remain in the kayak. There are scenes of rope gymnastics and other information not available elsewhere. The videotape is in three parts with some repetition, because it is really three videos, made to be viewed separately. The second part features 12 maneuvers by then 71 year old Manasse Mathaeussen, the dean of Greenland kayakers. It is available in NTSC and PAL. Narrated in Greenlandic. Time 87 minutes. $30.00 U.S., plus $5.00 Shipping & Handling (overseas orders add $5.00 additional S&H). *
