Biography:
Hugh B. Montgomery was born about 1846 in Coffee County Tennessee to Andrew L. Montgomery and wife Susan. Hugh was the seventh child of nine known children of his parents, and had four brothers and four sister.(1,2,3,10) Hugh probably never knew his father, based on the records in which Andrew was not shown with the family after the 1850 Census.

Mary Elizabeth Douglass was born on November 23, 1853 to John Newton Douglass and wife Susannah.(4)(See John Newton Douglass Family History)

In 1861, at the start of the Civil War when Tennessee ceded from the Union, Hugh was about fifteen years old. Living at home with his mother Susan and siblings Melissa, John, Margaret, William, and Thomas.(2)

On the January 8th, 1874 Hugh and Mary were married in Coffee County, Tennessee by a Minister of the Gospel.(5)

By 1880, Hugh and wife Mary can be found in Giles County, Tennessee. Not far from Hugh and his wife Mary, Mary's parents John and Susannah can be found. Hugh was farming, and had two children, Susan Jane who was born in about 1875, and William Walter, born in 1878. Both children were born in Coffee County, Tennessee, so between 1878 and 1880, Hugh and Mary must have moved from Coffee County to Giles County. Hugh also had a boarder living with him by the name of R.J. Winnett who was a farm laborer.(6)

Shortly afterwards, Hugh and family moved to Texas. They lived in Texas until 1892, when they moved Wanette in Indian Territory, later to become Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. At some point during this time, Hugh passed on. Mary Elizabeth then remarried to a John Holder. (7,8,9) To date a marriage record has not been found. John Holder's children from a previous marriage were Amelia, Alice, Otis, Marrell E., Maud, and John.(7,9)

Hugh Montgomery apparently died before 1900. It appears from the 1900 Census that Mary had remarried to John Holder by then. Mary and John appear in Eason Township of Pottawatomie County. (11) Mary and John lived here for at least twenty years. This is based upon finding John Holden and Mary Elizabeth still in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma in the 1920 Census. (12)

During the time that they were in Oklahoma, Susan married a J. Walter Stapp. Susan lived at Healdton, Carter County, Oklahoma. (7,8) Susan and Walter had at least three children that died at birth. A son was born August 25, 1898 and died August 26, 1898. A daughter was born December 11, 1899 and died the same day. Another daughter was born on April 2nd, 1901 and died the same day. All three children are buried in the Box Cemetery at Box, Cleveland County, Oklahoma.(13)

Mary's second husband John Holder was remembered fondly by Mary's natural grandchildren. Mrs. Hazel Cranfill mentioned that she could remember as a child living in Wanette going over to "Grandpa Holder's" home after Sunday church every week.(8)

John Holder passed away about October 16, 1926 at Wanette, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. From this, Mary received one third interest of "The north half of the Southwest Quarter (SW 1/4) and the Southwest Quarter (SW 1/4) of the Southwest Quarter (SW 1/4) of Section Twenty (20), Township Six (6), North of Range Two (2) East of the Indian Meridian and effects". John Holder's estate was settled by F.L. Miller in Pottawatomie County Court in June, 1927, and such record was published in the Weekly Herald, at Wanette, during the week of October 20, 1927. (9)

Mary's date of death is unknown. The last time found that Mary was alive was for the funeral of her son, William Walter Montgomery in 1936. It is indicated in his obituary that Mary was living in Healdton at that time, which is where her daughter Susan Stapp was living. She was probably living with her daughter. Mary therefore died sometime after 1936. From the oral history of the grandchildren of Mary, she was buried at Healdton, Oklahoma. Currently no record has been found as to her date of death.
