Each time I visit the site as I travel through Jacksonville I am touched by the sanctity and reverence felt at the Memorial. Often times I leave my wife and children in the car as I spend a quiet moment paying my respects and partaking of the wonderful spirit there.

The Paradox of Our Time

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings,
but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints.
We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time.

We have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment;
more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little,
drive too fast, get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired,
read too seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life.
We've added years to life, not life to our years.

We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing
the street to meet the new neighbor.
We've conquered outer space, but not inner space.
We've done larger things, but not better things.
We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
We've split the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less.
We plan more, but accomplish less.
We've learned to rush, but not to wait.
We build more computers to hold more information to produce more
copies than ever, but have less communication.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion;
tall men and short character; steep profits, and shallow relationships.

These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure,
but less fun; more kinds of food, but less nutrition.
These are days of two incomes, but more divorce;
of fancier houses, but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throw-away morality,
one-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from
cheer to quiet to kill.
It is a time when there is much in the show window and nothing in the
stockroom; a time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a
time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

  What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore-- And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

COMMENTS = On this day we always take the time to remember in a special way. Today we re-planted a pine tree that was growing beside our church, seeded by our Christmas tree of a previous year. We planted it at our home, as a way of keeping connected to all those we loved and are still very much a part of our lives. We especially remember 1st Sgt. David Battle, my dearest friend who I spent long nights with talking while the rockets were flying, Cpl. John Olson, my clerk & friend, Maj. Paul Hein, who gave me my Lt bars so long ago, and HM2 Bob Holland who took care of me so well. To all the Marines and Sailors who served faithfully and who's names are on the wall forever to be remembered, we love you. - Danny & Brenda Wheeler -

COMMENTS = I had the pleasure of serving the men and families prior to their deployments as part of the legal team at the Base SJA Office, ensuring that all paper work was in order. Of course in that line of work you never really expect it to be of any importance, however after that horrible day, I was glad that I had a small part to help the families try to continue after the loss of their loved one. Everyone of the men and families are in my prayers and will be forever. Semper Fidelis! Never forgotten.

COMMENTS = I just got back from Rhein Main AB, it was my first time there since I left in Feb 84, it was a homecoming of sorts but also some closure, if there is such a thing! The base is but a fraction of what it was, I found out where we did the I.D. for our fallen heroes, was in fact now part of the civilian airport in Frankfurt, it took me several days and with the help of my fellow legionaires at Post 5, outside of base in town called Waldorf, to get on that part of the old base. I laid a wreath and said a few words to the guys, my tears were both happy and sad, happy because I told myself I could do it, and sad because I ever had too!!! Their spot at Rhein Main will be forever a peaceful one, it is now part of a recreation area owned by the Flughaven there, for their employees. MY buddies at post 5 assured me that come Memorial Day next year the flowers will be placed again an a prayer said. This all was hard on me, but i feel better for it!! I plan on going again in two years, anyone wishing for info on the best way to travel there can contact me. I made several connections a while back, and found the cheapest flights and lodging for future endeavors! The American Legion Post 5 is in the next town to the base and a very good host for any travelers. - Respectfully, George T(ted) Willis -
