Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their local and world communities By conducting service projects and raising funds Lions strive to help those in need wherever need exists. The Lions motto is "We Serve - For all the World to See." The association was founded in Chicago, Illinois USA, in 1917. Although the youngest major service organization, Lions Club International has grown to be the world's largest. Its 1.35 million members belong to clubs in over 196 countries and geographical locations. In 1925 Helen Keller addressed the lions at their annual Internal Convention, challenging them to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired has become one of the association's most significant activities. That crusade has resulted in the establishment of the Sight First, a global blindness prevention program. Lions are men and women who have decided to give something back to their communities, who are dedicated to finding people in need, and who meet those need in an efficient but caring way. We believe that by working with other dedicated Lions we will accomplish more for our community than would be possible alone. Lions are serious about their commitment to humanitarian service, but don't mind having fun along the way.
