LOTS TO REPORT

The Love of My Life…if only words could express the intense love I feel when this little baby is nestled in my arms looking up at my face.  Her giggles, her expressions, and her immense curiosity make me love her all the more.  Is it possible for one person to feel so much love for another?   She’s still a peanut, less than 18 lbs.  Hair is finally growing.  Wave’s Bye Bye, is “so big”, says mama a lot and started to say bottle tonight.  Loves her baths, hates the car seat.  LOVES the cold MN air!  Day care is going great for her.  She loves playing with the older kids in the gym…my little active gal!

Eating Solid Food… Muriel is finally eating solid foods.  It’s been an interesting journey.  In Muriel’s orphanage, they fed her rice cereal in her bottle…I kept doing that for a while to keep the bonding going.  As much as I tried, getting her to switch to solids was going rather slowly.  Well, low and behold, I finally figured out why.  For Muriel’s age, she should be eating 4-8 tablespoons…I did the math and I had been feeding her 16-20 tablespoons….opps, the poor girl wasn’t hungry for table food!  We’ve got that straightened out and now we are down to about 3 tablespoons + all the table food she can eat…Brilliant?

Turning One…in just 2 short weeks, my little babe will be one year old.  I feel so fortunate to know that I will celebrate this day with Muriel.  People keep asking how I’m going to celebrate with her…well, call me a bad mommie, but it might just be a quiet gathering of us two little homebodies.  Of course I’ll get the free cake from Lunds/Byerlies and share it with Muriel’s day care friends.  By the way, if you have a Christmas tree up, can we come to your house and take pictures so Muriel thinks she had a first Christmas tree…ours only has lights and at this speed, that is all it will have.

Flannel + Minnesota Weather + Wiggly Baby = Flying Sparks…yes, it’s cold in Minnesota and that means the furnace runs a lot and the air inside is really dry.  Needless to say, when Muriel wears her flannel pj’s to be and I go check on her when she’s wiggling around – I see all sorts of sparks flying from static electricity.  That vaporizer just isn’t doing it’s job.

Welcoming New Friends…Today, Annette came home with Genevieve and Drew, Yuki and Maya (big sister) came home with Amelia.  Tomorrow Julie leaves to go get Tess, they return on Christmas day!  Next week Mary goes to get Vivian and in about a month, Tracie goes to get Abbie!

Uploading Video…I’ve been trying (in my spare time) to figure out how to put a few little video clips of “Gotcha Day” on the web.  That too isn’t going so well.  But I do hope someday to share with you.

Enjoy the new photos!  I’m still trying to get thank you’s and baby announcements out.  Oh and Christmas cards, so my apologies if its been past the proper etiquette time.

Last Week of Adoption Leave!

Well, here we are, almost 3 months after Muriel and I were united forever as a family.  Next Monday I go back to work or as someone at work said, come home.  Work is my reality, so there I must go.  We have found good daycare for Miss M.  She test-drove it 1 ½ days last week!  We survived with only a really snotty nose!  That’s my little girl, building her immunity up now!  She’s been home sick most of this, our last week together full time.  Fortunately for both of us next week will be a short workweek with Thanksgiving, so we can ease into the next transition of our lives.

This past three months has been amazing.  Okay, a miracle!  To think that close to 3 years ago a seed was planted.  I prayed, I researched, I prayed some more, I filled out some paperwork, I filled out some more paperwork, I prayed, I filled out some more paperwork and I waited.  And waited, and waited.  And just like a little heaven here on earth, all those prayers were answered and Muriel was revealed to me!

She is the most beautiful and amazing little girl.  She’s a ball of energy that just won’t quit.  She has a contagious smile and she’s quick to giggle.  She loves me when I’m no fun and have to clean instead of play and she loves me even after I stick that thing up her nose to get the snot out!  (Okay, it takes a while for her to love me after the nose thing).  She’s grown so much in the last few months.  She knows her name, she can clap and she knows she is “so big”!  She also knows how to get mom’s goat!

We have been blessed so much over the past 3 months with visits and gifts from amazing friends and family.  We’ve developed some new friends that will be ours forever!  I am still working on all the thank-yous…of course with an 11 month old around; I haven’t been as efficient as I would like to be.

Keep watching, I’ll keep the posts going as much as I can.  You’ll notice by the new pictures, that I’ve been a bit lame at the photo taking and that strange thing end up in my camera.  Always a surprise with Muriel.  I wouldn’t ask for it any other way!

FREAK OUT!

Yesterday Muriel had her first outing the Groveland Tap with 5 of the Sisters of St. Clare.  The Sista's, my friends from church, are so named because the Groveland Tap is on St. Clare Avenue.  Something spooked the holy begeezes out of Muriel when we walked in there.  The beer lights, the loud noises of the families, fast walking Val - our server, or the ball game on the TV.  Who the heck knows, but that girl shrilled and clung to me like never before.  I wasn't sure we'd be able to stay, but my little trooper found peace in the tap after about 5 minutes and enjoyed her first veggie burger.  Yum Yum.

Earlier in the day we took a trip to Pine Tree Apple Orchard with our friends Heather and Stew.  We did the corn maze, picked pumpkins (see cover photo), bought apples, and best of all applesauce donuts!  We had a blast.  Heather and Stew are practicing parents - waiting for their referral for a daughter from China.  Stew did a steller job of navigating the stroller through the corn maze.

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY MURIEL

It's any wonder I pulled off a cake at day care and a few presents.  Yesterday I had spaghetti sauce for dinner (forgot the spaghetti) and then found the dish soap perfectly chilled in the refrigerator.  Sleep?  Did anyone mention sleep?  Now don't get me wrong.  Muriel sleeps through the night and goes to bed between 7:30 and 8:00.  What I do with my time so that I'm up until 11:10 (time right now) posting on this blog, I don't know.

Yes, Miss M turned one today and it was a glorious day.  It rained all morning (it rained the day I got her and the day of her Chinese blessing – I was told rain is a sign of good luck).  This afternoon it snowed, Muriel’s first snow.  One of our local grocers, Lunds, offers ¼ sheet cakes on your child’s first birthday.   At lunch, I picked up Muriel’s cake and took it to her day care.  Muriel had a ball digging into the cake.  One lick and the girl was hooked.  We shared the cake with others at daycare.  This evening she opened a few gifts from my favorite kids store here - Peapods. Love that store!  We’ll take one of everything.  Can’t wait until she is old enough for the velcro veggies!

Speaking of day care, Muriel is doing wonderful there.  I feel like God once again joined us on this journey and pointed me in the direction of a daycare with loving, caring and compassionate staff.  We are so lucky to have found the opening we did.

In other news, many of you have e-mailed asking if I saw the new guidelines (or should I say restrictions) for adoption from china.  Yes I did.  I am disheartened by the new policies and how they may affect some of the people I’ve met along the way.  At the same time, I think God’s timing for me was perfect.  Muriel was born and entered my life at a time when I would not need to worry about the changes.  Thank you God for your perfect timing.  Now as for a future Chinese sister for Muriel, our only option would be a husband first…God...any suggestions?

Well, it’s past this mom’s bedtime.  This first four months together have been amazing.  I can only imagine what else in store for the wild adventures of Muriel and Tracy!

Merry Christmas

Child of God!

Today was baptism day!  Muriel was welcomed into Christ's kingdom during mass today. Like so many things, God seems to continue to arrange things for me in such wonderful ways.  Mass was so special as our dear friend Cora (12 years old) was an altar server, Jenny (one of my Sista's of St. Clare) graced the babies with her voice singing the Litnay of Saints, and 5 additional Sista's of Clare presented the gifts.  I had no idea any of these things were happening and they all made this mass special for us as Muriel's Godparents, Holly and Mike (I've know Holly since I was Muriel's age) agreed guide Muriel through a Christ filled life.

After mass about 45 of our family and friends joined us for soup, salad, and sundaes!  We are a blessed family!  A humongous thanks to my mom who came early for the weekend and helped me get everything ready.  She is a constant inspiration to me to be the best mom I can be.

We Miss you Griffie

Today we said goodbye to our loving cat Griffie.  She was adopted into my home about 5 years ago as a middle-aged cat.  The past 9 months have been up and down with Griffie, a now geriatric cat with older cat issues.  The ride to the vet today was really weird, it was like we all knew, even Griffie, that this was our last time together.  I cried, Muriel coo'ed to comfort me, and Griffie sat in an unusual silence. This was a hard day.  Muriel and Griffie did well together and I will miss waking up with Griffie by by side.

She's 9 months old!

Yesterday Muriel turned 9 months old. I'm not sure this milestone birthday will rank high on her must remember.  We visited friends, the Lindberg’s (that is the part to remember).  It was great to meet Cal, Ella, and Lacy and their mom Lynelle.  Lynelle and I met working summer camp in college - 20 years ago or something like that.

The unmemorable parts were a visit for some standard new baby blood tests (Muriel didn't much care for this) and a trip out to the alley to see the new asphalt being laid down.  Now that is excitement here in the neighborhood.  We were talking with a neighbor on how unfortunate it was that it rained all day otherwise we could have spent more time watching the City construction workers.

We are doing well.  Muriel had 4 days of being mixed up with her days and nights and then she was on Minnesota time thanks to a tip from a friend at church to get her out in the morning sun.  Thank goodness it was only 4 nights.  Mommie could only handle that many days of playing from 1-4 a.m.

Muriel seems to be more comfortable in her new surroundings and room.  She is a very curious little child, so curiosity is taking the forefront over attention to any specific things right now.   She's not too fond of her car seat or high chair yet and slow to have interest in foods other than her bottle.  We are not worrying though as adoption experts reassure us that giving an adopted baby a little extra time is just fine.  I think once she gets the hand of other foods, she jump quickly through the ranks of puree, mashed and solid foods.

Muriel delights me every day with her smile and confuses me with her cries.  Regardless, I look at her with this deep love and amazement of the grace of a child.  When we snuggle at the end of the day all is good in this gift from God!

There is No Place Like Home!

We arrived home at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and breezed through customs and immigration to meet Grandpa, Uncle Erik and his family, Aunt Penny, and a host of other new friends who have either adopted or are waiting to adopt.  Muriel is a US Citizen!

Thank you all for your ongoing support during this journey.  Muriel and I are so happy to be home, even through it is yet another new environment and more adjustment!  I'm thankful for the time we had in China where Muriel could start to bond.  It makes the transition to home in Minnesota a little easier.

Muriel is most curious about Griffie, our cat.  Since Muriel is so mobile, she chases after the cat.  So far the cat is very curious and cautiously approaches Muriel to sniff her.  For now, I'm keeping some distance between the two as they get used to each other’s smells and sounds.

I am also very thankful for our travel families.  The families of Lily, Faith, Maddie, Anna, Katie, and Emmy were such joys to meet and experience this life changing miracle.  As a group we have talked about keeping in touch and helping our girls continue to know each other as they did during their first 8 months in the orphanage.

Muriel and I are blessed to have such great family and friends.  Thank you!

p.s. I will create a new page on the web with periodic (maybe 2 times a month or so) so you can watch Muriel grow!
