CONCERNED RESIDENTS AGAINST AIRPORT POLLUTION ENDORSES FOUR CHALLENGERS FOR SANTA MONICA CITY COUNCIL
Santa Monica, CA – October 8, 2008
Concerned
Residents Against Airport Pollution (CRAAP) is endorsing four challengers, rather than the four incumbents, to fill the
four open seats on the Santa Monica City Council in the upcoming November 4th election. After thorough consideration
of the candidates’ statements at the Santa Monica City Council forum on Santa Monica Airport (SMO) issues put on by
CRAAP Monday, October 6, and to their responses to the four SMO-related questions sent to them in advance, CRAAP strongly
endorses Susan Hartley, Linda Piera-Ávila, Jerry Rubin, and Ted Winterer as the candidates most capable of representing and carrying out the will of the Santa Monica voters, and as the candidates
who are advocating for positive change.
CRAAP Director, Martin Rubin says, “These four candidates will bring
back to the Council the energy and direction needed to address the environmental and quality-of-life issues that Santa Monica
residents are growing more upset with every passing day. CRAAP can not in good conscience endorse any of the incumbents who
have over the past four years been unwilling, or unable to take an aggressive stand regarding air pollution from jet traffic
at the airport.”
Activist Jerry Rubin, who promised to make SMO pollution a top priority if elected, receives a strong endorsement.
Susan Hartley is well aware of the airport’s pollution since she lives very close to the end of the runway and as a
Santa Monica Airport Commissioner has been a strong advocate for alleviating jet pollution. Environmental
activist Linda Piera-Ávila spoke very knowledgeably and
expressed a strong desire to address the communities concerns as did Ted Winterer, a community activist with the Ocean Park
Association and Council for a Livable City as well as working as a member of the Santa Monica Recreation and Parks Commission.
Martin Rubin goes on to say, “Americans and Santa Monicans are expressing a strong desire for change, and when
it comes to pollution from the jets at Santa Monica Airport, neighbors are crying out that it really is time for a change”
