The Friends of Sunset Park wants YOU to let our Federal Representatives and the Santa Monica City know that the community is will NOT accept the substandard runway safety proposals of the FAA.

Sample points:

· The close proximity of the runways to homes urgently requires an effective safety solution NOW

SM STAFF REPORT RECOMMENDS THE CITY COUNCIL REJECT THE FAA'S LATEST OFFER

"It is the Staff's recommendation that if the FAA Proposal remains unchanged after the study session that it be rejected as inadequate to provide a meaningful safety enhancement to the runway.  It is further recommended that the City Council direct Staff to explore the implementation of effective safety enhancements for the Airport and report back at the City Council session on Sept. 25, 2007 with a recommendation detailing an appropriate course of action."

Sample Letter to SM City Council

[Date]

Dear City Councilmembers,

I support the Friends of Sunset Park position opposing the recent Safety Enhancement Proposal for the Santa Monica Airport.

· Safety of the residents should be the priority of any safety enhancement plan, not the preservation of access for faster, larger aircraft.

· Equal protection should be provided for the residents on both sides of the airport.

· Safety inappropriate aircraft should be clearly identified and banned by ordinance; not left to pilot discretion.

· If EMAS is agreed upon, the funding mechanism should rest solely upon airport users and not obligate the City beyond the 2015 expiration of the 1984 Agreement between the City and the FAA.
