- Though the Bible mentions, outside of the book of Job, a number of men by that name, various technical problems prevent us from identifying one of them as our man. We can however place him chronologically due to several contextual clues:
- The patriarchal sacrificial system
- The term used to denote money
- The portrayal of animals as wealth
- The term used to describe God
- Job's very long, prediluvian-era life
- Sun worship the predominant form of idolatry
- The conspicuous absence of any reference to Israel
- "Why shouldn't he be loyal, when you pay him so well?" Job 1:9
- "...sell all that you have and follow me. But the man became very sad, for he was extremely rich...It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" Luke 18:22-25
- "He who comes to God must believe that He is" Hebrews 11:6
- "He considered that God is able to raise men even from the dead." Hebrews 11:19
- "...he did not waver in unbelief, but grew strong in faith...therefore it was reckoned to him as righteousness." Romans 4:20-22
- "I had heard of you, but now I know you." Job 42:5
- Abraham hoped (trusted) in God, against the human hope of having an heir. Roman 4:8
- "Men of whom the world was not worthy...gained approval through their faith." Hebrews 11:38-39
- Suffering is in part due to a creation that is enslaved to corruption until Jesus' return. Romans 8:18-22
- "As predictable as embers which rise from a fire, man gravitates toward conflict." Job 5:7
- John 16:33
- "Do you think evil happens only to people who are evil? Then watch out for yourselves." Luke 13:1-5
- "I have been wasting my time believing in God. All I get out of it is trouble, while unbelievers prosper and are at ease" Psalm 73:10-13
- "...When I return, will I find faith on the earth?" Luke 18:8 "Love God with all your choices, all your feelings, and all your considerations." Matthew 22:37
- "If you believe, you will suffer for it." Philippians 1:29 "A slave is not greater than his Master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you." John 15:20
- The phrase "Blessed be the name of the Lord" emphasizes trust in the nature of God, a more tender and faithful approbation of the Almighty than mere belief.
- "Entrust your soul to a faithful God..." I Peter 4:19 "I know this is a test..." Job 23:10 "I know God's heart." Job 10:13 "Though He slay me, I'm still His." Job 19:25-26
Fear: The Bible associates godly fear with joy (Ps 47:1-2), and love (Ps 97:10).
