1.) Start by reading about Salem's Maritime Heritage . Be sure to read the information on all three pages. (Main Page, 1776-1812, and After 1812)

2.) Read about a tall ship that is being built for Salem, the Friendship.

3.)Next, take a look at some paintings of sailing vessels from the period about which we will be reading, from the Peabody Essex Museum . Be sure to pay special attention to the caption regarding the bark Emily Wilder.

4.) Anne Rinaldi has said that she envisioned Hannah and her family living in a house such as the Derby House . Take a look at it and at the homes on this page which were typical of the fine homes owned by leading Salem merchants.

5.)Read "An Interview with Anne Rinaldi."

6.)Finally, check out the list of Projects that you may chose to do for extra credit.
