Roll of Thunder,Hear My Cry - Movie vs. Novel

by Kevin H.

We recently read the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. I was hoping the movie would be as good as the book. After watching the movie, I realized it wasn't. The movie did not go into as much detail. It also left out many important scenes like the one with the ax in the store.

I thought one actor played his part very well, the one who played T.J. .In the book, T.J. told the Logan kids about the burnings. This actor made the story come to life whenever he was in a scene. He played the part just as I expected he would.

There were some scenes that were just as the author described. One was the fire scene. The only thing wrong with that scene was that the fire was too small. Another good one was the one where Cassie bumped into Lillian Jean in Strawberry. There was one scene they added in the film that worked very well. That was when the Logans paid off the mortgage.

I was disappointed in the portrayal of Mr. Morrison. In the book, he was described as being bigger than everyone. In the movie, he is the same size. In the book, it said he could lift the truck with no problem; in the movie, he struggled.

I think the movie would have been better if they hadn't left out so many scenes. One was the one where the Wallace boys tried to rob the store and blame it on T.J. One scene not done well was the one where Cassie and Lillian Jean fight because it was short and did not go into as much detail.

So if you were going to see the movie, I would say not to waste your time; just read the book. It even has two sequels, Let the Circle Be Unbroken and Road to Memphis.
