"A good poem is a contribution to reality.
The world is never the same
once a good poem has been added to it.
A good poem helps to change the shape of the universe,
helps to extend everyone's knowledge of himself
and the world around him."

-- Dylan Thomas

The best book I've ever found for helping children of all ages learn to write poetry is Benjamin Greene's Beyond Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue : A Practical Guide for Helping Students Write Free Verse. You may order it from Amazon.com by clicking on the title. I've had wonderful success using this material with my eighth graders, and I know it would work equally well with younger or older students.

"If a poem is written well,
it was written with the poet's voice and for a voice.
Reading a poem silently instead of saying a poem
is like the difference between staring at sheet music
and actually humming or playing the music on an instrument."
-- Robert Pinsky, the 39th Poet Laureate of the United States

"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses."
