I Know . . . Poems

I Know Summer

I know summer. . .
The crash of waves at the beach,
The ice cream truck's song playing over and over again,
The sound of chldren playing at the park.

I know summer. . .
The smell of salty beach waves,
The barbecues,
The sweet lemonade from the childrens' twenty-five lemonade stands.

I know summer. . .
'Hey, don't splash me!", " Twenty-five cents, get your lemonade!" "Hey, ice cream man! Wait! Dont forget me!" I know summer.

I Know Music

I know music. . .
The booming bass notes that pulse through your body,
The low jazzy tones emitted by a saxophone,
The rhythmic words flowing from the singer's lips transporting you into a lyrical dream.

I know music. . .
The smell of new wood in the hollow of an acoustic guitar,
The smooth glassy texture of piano keys,
The bronze shine of a new trombone.

I know music. . .
" I love that song," " Pick up the tempo"," Strum a G chord." I know music.

I Know Baseball

I know baseball. . .
The pop of the glove after a solid throw,
The rustle of the crowd,
The thundering voice of the umpire.

I know baseball. . .
The sound of solid pine and rubber clashing,
The diving catches,
The errant throws,
The clutch plays.

I know baseball. . .
" Get em' out here, kid!" " You can do it!" " One more to go!," "Strike three you're out!" I know baseball.

I Know Basketball

I know basketball . . .
The pressure of the ball thudding against the floor,
The vibraton of the ball hitting the rim,
The pain in your hands from constant clapping on the bench.

I know basketball. . .

The nasty smell of sweat,
The sweet smell of Gatorade.

I know basketball.
" Get the rebound," " Shoot it," "Pass it," " Hustle," " Terrific job," I know basketball.
