A Very Special Gift

by Nick D. (12/98)

A gift I received on my third birthday, without my knowing it at the time, would become the most meaningful gift I have ever received. This gift was given to me by my grandparents. It was a beginner set of a wooden train set called Brio . While my mom and grandmother would go shopping, my grandmother would always let me stop and she would play with me at the display table in the store. I always had such a good time playing with it that she decided it would be a great gift to buy me for my birthday. 1 always had an interest in trains even before I was interested in playing with them. My grandparents knew this because whenever we would drive by train tracks, I would always make the noise of a train until the train tracks were out of sight.

On my third birthday I could not wait to build a track and my grandmother was right there to be the first one to help me. Every time my grandparents came over for supper or to babysit, we would build a different track and play with it until I had to go to bed. We would always make up a story to go with each train track setup we made.

Each holiday or birthday that came after that, my grandparents would add to the set by giving me a new train or track pieces. I now have a large collection of different trains and track pieces. A few of my favorite ones are two different bridges, a garage, a toll bridge, a boat, many people, and many benches for the people to sit on and wait for the train. It was always a special time together with just me and my grandparents. Even when my grandmother started to lose her sight, she still did her best to help me build the perfect track.

I have taken such good care of my train set that it still looks like new, and it has grown to be a huge collection. When I have children, I am going to pass down the train set to them. I will tell them the story of how special the train set was to me because of the very special relationship I had with my grandparents. I will show them some of the creative tracks we would create and tell them how my grandmother would help me use my imagination to go on many different train trips with my Brio Train Tracks.
