Welcome to my site.
Here you will find the latest news about the Madeline Bean mysteries.
* For those who have been waiting for PERFECT SAX to come out in paperback, wait no longer. The mass market edition was
published by Avon Books on January 25, 2005.
* And the newest hardcover, the seventh Madeline Bean mystery, THE FLAMING LUAU OF DEATH, is on bookstore shelves as of March
1. HarperCollins included TFLOD in their "First Look" Program. To read the early reviews, click on 1st reviews link at right.
* And if I'm coming to your town, please stop by to say hello. If I am missing your city this time, might I suggest ordering
a signed book from one of the great independent bookstores on my tour? More dates are being added, so do check back again.*
There will be many chances to get books signed, so do check out the link to my book tour schedule. (Click link under the
cover of PERFECT SAX at right)
2005 will be a busy year.
* I taught a special four-day intensive mystery workshop at UCLA Extension's Writers Studio in early February. It was fabulous
and the writers I met there were inspiring. Many traveled to UCLA from out of town, one terrific writer flew in from Austria!
I wish each of them well and can't wait until they each finish their own first mystery novels.
* Of course, I will be kicking off THE FLAMING LUAU OF DEATH book tour with a gonzo Luau launch party on March 3rd at Vroman's
Bookstore in Pasadena, CA, home of all the Mad Bean kick-offs. Please e-mail me if you'd like to receive a special invitation.
* Have you signed up for Author Tracker yet? If not, I urge you to give it a try. Click my photo at the top of the website

FUNNIEST MYSTERY OF THE YEAR
MUMBO GUMBO WINNER!
Announced at Left Coast Crime in Monterey, CA, on February 21, 2004, the Lefty Award is presented to the year's best humorous

I am very very grateful. The statue is amazing--a beautiful sculpture of a Sea Otter frolicking in the waves off the coast
of Monterey. Thanks to all the fans and friends who voted and continue to enjoy the Mad Bean experience.

Nothing can beat PERFECT SAX! Heh! The latest Madeline Bean mystery is here. A stolen saxophone, a smoking martini, a very
sexy bad boy, and a murder in Mad's own bedroom add to Maddie's blues.
More news! The paperback edition of MUMBO GUMBO (Avon) is also in stores now.
And thanks to all our friends who were able to join us for our crazy/yummy/cool publication party to launch PERFECT SAX
at Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, California, on JANUARY 13. Hosted by the ever-cool Maret Orliss, fun, friends, food and
drink topped off the outrageous party. I must thank my jazzy son Sam for playing the sax for the throng, along with Chris
on guitar. Also want to thank my chef son, Nick, for helping set up and running the party. I was glad to see many of you
there or at one of the book tour stops where we celebrated Mad Bean #6 with jazz bands, black & white M & Ms, and
great mystery bookstores across the country!

THE TOUR! THE TOUR!
On the road--I visited with so many great fans and friends all over the place. Special thanks to the wonderful friends
at MYSTERIOUS GALAXY in San Diego, who found a great jazz band to kick out the jams and whose staff dressed in Black &
White to match the B&W Ball in the new book. I love this store!! They may still have signed copies, so check them out!
I also owe thanks to THE MYSTERY BOOKSTORE, Westwood, CA, BOOK CARNIVAL, Orange, CA, MYSTERIES TO DIE FOR, Thousand Oaks,
and send my best wishes to the Mystery Maven, Beth Caswell, and wonderful Joan Wunsch, the owner of COFFEE, TEA & MYSTERY,
Garden Grove, CA.
On the road, I was happy to get to spend time with Barbara Peters who hosted a special party at ROMANCING THE BEAN in
Scottsdale, AZ in conjunction with her great mystery store, THE POISONED PEN. My thanks also go to MURDER BY THE BOOK, Denver,
and HIGH CRIMES, Boulder, CO.
I made my first ever trip to San Antonio to join my great friend, Patsy Asher at her great bookstore, REMEMBER THE ALIBI.
Not only did I sign books and meet a slew of new readers, I got to eat at the most fabulous restaurants. Patsy took me to
some incredible Tex/Mex spots. And her daughter took me shopping. What a trip!
I also got my first chance to visit with Joanne Sinchuck at her beautiful new location of MURDER ON THE BEACH in Del Rey
Beach, FL. My signing and talk fit in perfectly with the Jazz on the Beach event going on outside in the streets that night
so Joanne and I hung out and entertained new readers while the bands played live music all night. Florida is terrific!
Thanks for my Coffee & Crime breakfast event, to MYSTERY LOVERS BOOKSHOP, Oakmont, PA. All in all, January was amazing
and I thank all who came out to say hello along the route.
If you'd like to hear me speak or get a book signed (perferrably mine, but I'm not that picky) check out the HarperCollins
website for up-to-the-minute book tour info:

JF Interview with Writer's Write
Look for a dark and original short story to appear in the noir mystery collection LIKE A CHARM coming in 2004 from Random
House UK and Morrow US. Contributors include: Kelley Armstrong, Mark Billingham, John Connolly, Emma Donoghue, Jerrilyn Farmer,
John Harvey, Jane Haddam, Lynda La Plante, Laura Lippman, Val McDermid, Denise Mina, Fidelis Morgan, Peter Robinson, Karin
Slaughter, and Peter Moore Smith.
My story is titled The Eastlake School and is one of a series of connected stories that each include a charm bracelet
that gets passed from story to story. The book is called "a novel in voices" and it is terrific. It came out in
England first (Feb 2004) and I hear they like their mysteries on the edgy side in London these days. Be prepared. It will
be published by Morrow in May, 2004.
I'm excited to be included with all these stellar mystery writers and found the assignment (Karin Slaughter asked me to
write something rather gripping and intense) to be a wonderful excursion into my darkest side.
