WYATT AND ELIZABETH HELMS

From Nancy's Lawrence County Corners - Lone Oak Cemetery

"There is a story about how Lone Oak Cemetery was started. A man was riding his horse home one night when a light came from the ground and traveled in front of him to a large oak tree and went back into the ground. The man believed this was a sign he was about to die and this was where he was to be buried. He died shortly after that and is buried under the oak tree."

We have since learned that our great great grandfather, Wyatt Helms born 1826 in Mecklenburg, NC was the first man to be buried in the Lone Oak Cemetery.

Thank you to Darlene Martin for additional names as well as for the story about the beginnings of Lone Oak Cemetery.

I received this in an email from Bonnie Helms Walters:

The head stones and their inscriptions in the Lone Oak Cemetery that are of interest to the Helms are as follows (as they are placed in the cemetery - listed south to north)

          Elizabeth Helms           1893
          Wyatt Helms                1875
"The first to be buried here by a guiding light in 1875 We Shall Live Again"

          Emley Helms                1875
          Noah Helms                 1872
          Mary Helms                 1879
          Leeton Helms               1888
          Emerine Helms             1934
          James D. Helms           1943
          Willie Albert Helms     1872 - 1949

In conversations with my father (Wyatt Helms, Sep 26, 1905 - present):
          1.  He states that his GGrandfather was the first to be buried at Lone
Oak.  That would be Wyatt Helms, father of Leeton Helms.
          2.  Because of her burial site next to Wyatt, we believe Emley Helms is
          Wyatt Helms' daughter.
          3.  He also is positive that Noah Helms is a son of Leeton Helms (died
          in infancy).

If Wyatt Helms is in fact the first to be buried in Lone Oak cemetery, we
believe his father Archibald Helms is probably buried somewhere else.
We intend to go looking for Archibald later this year.  Hope this has
          helped you.
