Moses Coffman was the son of Leonard and Elizabeth Turns Coffman of Logan Co. Kentucky. His first marriage to Nancy Coffman ended in 1843 with divorce, in Springfield, IL, Sangamon Co. He was a farmer in Cooper Township. He then married Mary Jane Bell Coffman in her home town of Missouri township in Brown Co., Il. Mary Jane had a son prior to her marriage to Moses, Joseph, who was born in 1848 and who was deaf and dumb. In the 1860 Missouri Census, Moses and Mary Jane Bell Coffman had a family grocery, property valued at $1500, and family members included son Joseph, age 12, Daughter Mary Elisabeth age 7 yrs, Emily age 3 yrs, Moses age l yr, and Moses Sr. son Alfred Coffman age 27. They were living in Palmyra, MO., Marion Co. Mo.

Alfred fought in the Civil war. He was mustered in on 10-10-1863 in Palmyra, Mo. , Co. D - 3rd Missouri Cavalry and was mustered out in Little Rock, AK on 11-26--1864. I was unable to find Alfred after this time.

Moses did not appeared in Mo. after the 1860 Census, but Mary Jane did appear in a business advertisement in Quincy, Il. in 1872 as a seamstress. he later appeared with John Mann and Mary Elisabeth Fultz in the 1900, Adams Co., IL Census. On Her death certificate dated 9-22-1909, it was stated that her body was removed to Mt. Sterling, IL for burial in the Bell Family Cemetery.    Jeri Helms Fultz
