NOTES: James Franklin and Martha (Mattie) Hancock James Franklin came to Arkansas in abt 1875 from Chester District, SC. He was born in the yr of 1845 and we do not know his parents. Mattie Prichard was born in NC and we know nothing of her family. James fought in the Civil War in SC, Chester District, Co. F. 26 SC iInfantry, he enlisted 2-11-1864 and was wounded in Danville VA April 3, 1865. He was admitted to hospital with contusion of the left shoulder caused by a shell. He served Extra Duty as a nurse at the hospital in Charleston, SC and Petersburg, VA from June 1 to August 12, 1864. James and Mattie Hancock are buried at Trinity Cemetery in Bono AR. He has a Civil War grave marker and Mattie has none, but is buried beside her husband. They were listed in the Directory Of Randolph Co AR on pg 68 in Reyno Township, Datto AR PostOffice. as: Hancock, J. F. 64, farmer came from SC and married Miss Prichard in 1880, 4 children, Charles, Edward, Katie and Jessie, Freewill Baptist. James and Mattie Hancock were the parents of the only Helms Grandmother I ever knew, Kate Hancock Riggs Helms, and she was the mother of the last 5 children of my grandfather, William Cam Helms. Her picture is found in the "Helms and Allied Families Pictures" page. You will find a story about Kate in the notes of William Cam Helms on this page. She was beautiful and I loved her. Other connections of the Hancock family are the sons of James and Mattie. Charles Hancock married Kate Brown Richardson, daughter fo Geo. Dallas and Mary Brown and Jesse Hancock who married Nevada Brown daughter of Kate Brown Hancock, descendants of Powell and Sarah Brown. Jeri Helms Fultz William Cam Helms I didn't know my fraternal grandparents. Will Cam and Martha E. Davis Helms. My father, Ray Helms was only seven years old when his mother died on 6-6-1913 in childbirth. Will Cam Helms died 12-16-1931, three years before I was born. We do have pictures of them both. Will Helms remarried 3-29-1914 to Kate Hancock Riggs, a single mother of a little boy, Melvin Riggs,who was partially blind. Kate was a beautiful woman with long red hair that she wore in a bun framing her face. Kate and Will had five children. Kate was the only grandparent I knew on the Helms side of the family. Kate had a great sense of humor and spirit and was still very beautiful when she died. I don't know how she managed to raise five resentful little boys, her own blind son and proceed to have five more children and survive it all. I always loved her and the stories she used to tell me about the "old days". Though she had a hard life, I don't remember her to ever be depressed or down about the life God gave her. Will Helms was poor sharecropper all of his life and the surviving children remember moving every few years and having very little in the way of material things, but he was a loving man and all his children loved him.
