William Cam Helms Notes

I didn't know my fraternal grandparents. Will Cam and Martha E. Davis Helms. My father, Ray Helms was only seven years old when his mother died on 6-6-1913 in childbirth. Will Cam Helms died 12-16-1931, three years before I was born. We do have pictures of them both.

Will Helms remarried 3-29-1914 to Kate Hancock Riggs, a single mother of a little boy, Melvin Riggs,who was partially blind. Kate was a beautiful woman with long red hair that she wore in a bun framing her face. Kate and Will had five children. Kate was the only grandparent I knew on the Helms side of the family. Kate had a great sense of humor and spirit and was still very beautiful when she died. I don't know how she managed to raise five resentful little boys, her own blind son and proceed to have five more children and survive it all. I always loved her and the stories she used to tell me about the "old days". Though she had a hard life, I don't remember her to ever be depressed or down about the life God gave her.

Will Helms was poor sharecropper all of his life and the surviving children remember moving every few years and having very little in the way of material things, but he was loving man and all his children loved him. Jeri Helms Fultz
