John and Elizabeth McMullen Bell
John and Elizabeth Bell were
married in Morgan Co. IL in the late 1820's. They were the
second party to settle in Brown
Co., IL. John and his parents and siblings had moved to
Morgan Co. in 1826. and
on to Brown Co., IL in 1830. John and his brothers James and Ira
Bell settled next to each other in section 20. They were natives
of Kentucky, but migrated to Indiana in an early day and in 1826 came to
Illinois, stopped in Morgan Co. until early in 1830 when they came to Brown
Co. and settled as above stated.
John's family consisted
of his wife Elizabeth and two children, Mary Jane and Robert.
His house was a crude log cabin
without any door and was lighted by the absence of a log in one side.
A blanket served the purpose of a door. He remained here but a short
time, whenhe moved to section 28 and erected a comfortable log house.
It was on this farm that he died in 1882, his first wife preceding him
by many years. John remarried to an Elizabeth Carter and had
many more children.
