The greater part of our trip to Hawaii for our anniversay was spent on Maui. At first, it was a bit dull for our taste, but the laid-back attitude of the people and serenity of the surroundings made me fall in love with this place. The clencher was our sunrise trip to the top of Haleakala.

While on Maui, we stayed in Lahaina, a town of tourism and very interesting history. |
Deb got interested in the craft of palm-leaf origami, making cute litte fishes. |

Here's James standing with the Lahaina banyan tree. It's a tree with a few dozen trunks, covering the entire town square! |
While we were there, we got to see a canoe festival. Tteams from all over Polynesia came to build a canoe from scratch and hold a race. |

The view from Haleakala - the House of the Sun. In the disatance is the Big Island. |
It was bloody cold at 10,000 ft. above the ocean. James was not happy! |

We got a photo after sunrise, with the Science City observatory for backdrop. |

One of my favorite photos - my first black sand beach! |
We stopped for a picnic lunch and found that mongooses love to mooch at this park above the beach. |

Then, we took a dip in "the Seven Sacred Pools" -- which aren't sacred, and there aren't only 7 of them anyway. |
Our first stop after leaving Kahului airport, at a road overlook. Molokini is behind James. |

We rented a PT Cruiser. With flames on the side. shudder! |
