Gods and Their Gaps

One of the more amusing things for a Freethinker to watch is what believers make of scientific discovery. Long past are the fights over *whether* to allow scientific research. Now, there's no question on that, except in certain odd corners of the world. So believers are forced to try and make the best of the situation, by looking for gaps to crowbar their gods into, and by trying to put the sort of "spin" on such discoveries that will make the answer come out to *their* version of god.

I'm reminded, first off, of something I read years ago in a book titled (IIRC) "The Power of the Witch." It was by some sort of leader of the Wiccan movement, and it was pretty interesting. At one point, the author claimed that she had learned through supernatural means that Jupiter emits blue light, instead of merely reflecting sunlight. She then mentioned that she had seen that NASA had discovered with its space probes that Jupiter does in fact emit its own electromagnetic radiation. She then expressed confidence that eventually, they would discover that this EM radiation was, in fact, blue.

This is, of course, laughable, since it's pretty common knowledge that Jupiter's EM radiation is almost entirely in the radio range - a pretty far cry from blue. But the author was (apparently) completely ignorant of that fact, preferring to stick with the notion that her theory about Jupiter's blue light still might be proven.

Another example of this happened when I was talking with a "Young Earth Creationist" (YEC) at the company I work for. He was rather happy about some data that had been released by NASA from Hubble telescope research. He noted with some glee that the astronomers were having to admit that the universe was far less old than most theories had originally stated. I found it amusing that he was excited over this, considering that the discrepancy involved was between the old figure of 15 billion years and the new figure of around 10 billion years. Quite a far cry from the 6 or 7 *thousand* years he and the other YEC's are shooting for. Did that matter to him? Oh no! There was a "difficulty" with the current theories of cosmology, and that meant it was on the verge of collapse!

These instances illustrate the concept. All the time, we hear these people, trying to point to "problems" with this or that theory. As if those problems will make them fall completely apart, leaving the field completely open to them for putting forward their standard theory: "Goddidit." Over and over, they pop up, talking about such inane things as "fossils on mountaintops" or "no transitional species" as if these things hadn't been considered and explained by scientists decades ago.

Apparently, a "god of the gaps" will happily fit into any tiny, even imaginary gap available &endash; and especially into the gaps between the ears of certain believers...
