ELKHART --With apologies to Yogi Berra, Saturday was deja vu all over again.

The weather cooperated so beautifully with the 2004 Elkhart Jazz Festival that Elkhart Centre executive director Sandy Geiser was knocking wood and crossing her fingers, "waiting for the other shoe to drop."

But it didn't. And it hasn't. And the final night of the 17th annual Festival went into the record books for large crowds and satisfied listeners.

Jeff DeHerdt

Keyboardist and vocalist
Who he plays with: This weekend it's Cathy Morris & Collage, but he also has his own group in Indianapolis.
Years as a pro: 18, half his life
Why play jazz? "I think jazz is the best idiom to explore an instrument in," he said. "Jazz nowadays encompasses a whole array of styles and feels. You may as well say, 'I play all types of music,' when you play jazz."
Hobbies: Music, which he calls "a wonderful paying hobby," and collecting comics. (He wore a Spiderman T-shirt Saturday.)
The degree he doesn't use: Electrical engineering
How to become a jazz fan: "Listen to everything you can. You're bound to like something. There's so much out there."
