NetWorker - What is it?
- Commercial backup product from Legato Inc.
- Unattended backup capability up to enterprise level.
- Works with virtually all backup devices and libraries.
- Server available for various UNIX flavors, WNT, W2K, NetWare.
- Client agents available for even more platforms.
- Database modules available to work with vendor hot db backup products.
- Some definitions
- Server - The host machine which provides the
control functions for the NetWorker data zone, where
the media and client indexes are stored.
- Storage Node - A host machine with a storage
device under the control of the server.
- Client - A host machine which has backup
services provided by the server. Logical representations
of actual clients are defined on the server and are
used to provide control functions for the backups
of those clients.
- Group - A logical entity of which clients can be
a member. Groups are defined and exist on the server
and provide certain functions in the context of a
backup. Most typically, groups provide a start time
for the backups of the client members.
- Data Stream - Every source of backup data
specified in a client definition generates a data
stream from the client which is directed to the
server or to a storage node over a network.
- Multiplexing - Multiple concurrent data streams
can be directed to a single backup device. Every data
stream is segmented and written on the backup volume
in non-continuous blocks, intermingled with blocks
from other data streams.
- Saveset - The entire set of blocks written to
one or more backup volumes which represents a single
data stream.
- Media Index - The NetWorker database which
contains information about which volumes are under
the control of the server and which savesets have been
written on those volumes.
- Client Index - The NetWorker database which
contains information about the individual files
written from clients to backup volumes.
- Browse Policy - The length of time client indexes
will be maintained online. Client indexes are
necessary for recovering individual files directly
from backup tapes.
- Retention Policy - The length of time savesets on
volumes will be considered valid. After the retention period is reached for a saveset, it is
marked as "expired" in the media index.
- Logical Volume Label - A unique header written on
a backup volume identifying it as a NetWorker volume
and containing the volume name.
- Volume Pool - A logical grouping of volume names.
A volume name can only be a member of a single pool
at a time.
- Clone - A duplication of a saveset written to
a volume which is a member of a clone pool.
