orGenta Items and Notes Help

You may enter Items into orGenta adjacent to any of the Categories, where the text reads "Click and Type new item here". After you enter the text of an Item it appears beneath the Category -- it gets assigned to the Category. Since orGenta also assigns the item automatically to matching categories, you may find it easier to type all of your items adjacent to the "Unassigned" category. When orGenta finds a matching Category it removes your item from Unassigned. Hence, after you finish entering many items into Unassigned, whatever remains left in that Category after a couple of minutes you will have to assign manually (or create new matching Categories). To import items from a text file, choose Tools, Import Items.

To delete an Item, select its row by clicking on the gray cell selector to the left of the Item Grid, and then press your Delete key (you may select multiple items by using shift-click to select successive rows; ctrl-click adds additional rows to your selection). When you delete an Item you get a choice of whether you want to discard the Item completely or just remove it from its Category:

If you choose to remove an Item from its Category and it doesn't belong to any other Category, then orGenta adds it to the TrashCan. When you discard an Item, it is gone for good (and removed from all Categories that it previously occupied).

When you click and edit an Item and change its text, you are actually changing the text on all occurrences of that Item (in all the Categories where it resides). If you start to Edit an Item and change your mind, press your Esc key. To move an Item to another Category click the dash within the Category pane that is highlighted adjacent to the row of your Item, and then drag it to its new location.

Add a Note by clicking on the checkbox next to your Item underneath the Note column. orGenta will open up a new Window for you to enter the Note text. Your note may be any length. Words inside of a note do not get matched against Categories. If you start to Edit a Note and change your mind, press your Esc key.

orGenta keeps three dates: When, Finished, and Entered. orGenta computes the When date from the text you enter in an Item -- it recognizes dates in multiple formats, including day-of-week entries. For instance, you can enter:

Pick up the dog on Thursday.
Pick up the dog on January 5th.
Pick up the dog 1/5/06.
Pick up the dog the first Wednesday of March.

The word "next" in an Item with a date means the day following a week after the following occurrence. For example, if today is Friday and you type "Pick up the Dog next Monday," orGenta will fill in the date that is 10 days in the future.

When you click on the Done checkbox, orGenta fills in the Finished date with the current date. Items that you mark as Done show during your current session but by default are hidden the next time you start orGenta. To show the hidden Done items, from the menu select View, Show Done.

orGenta also recognizes recurrent dates -- if you type in "Call Mom every Sunday" orGenta makes the When date this coming Sunday, but after you click the Done checkbox, orGenta adds another item with a when date of the succeeding Sunday.

Zoom and Ctrl-Click

If you type an item that is wider than the grid box, you will only see the leftmost portion of the item visible. You may click the item and hold Ctrl-arrow-right to read along the item, but it is easier to press the F8 key, which will bring up a "zoom" box showing all of the item text. The zoom box is read only -- you cannot modify the text of an item within the box.

If you enter an eMail address in the eMail column, or a URL in the Internet Link column, then you can navigate to them with a mouse click. First click on the item itself. Then use the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the screen to move to the eMail or Internet Link column. Hold down the Ctrl key, and the mouse icon will change to a pointing hand -- now you can click to send an eMail or visit the web site at the URL.
