Laos: Luang Prabang & Environs

Luang Prabang is an "outpost" town, gateway to the north of Laos and a World Heritage Site in its own right (a fact which may allow its distinct character to remain intact). It has the feeling of the "old West - oriental style - full of back packers and ex-pats from many countries.

At dawn we participated in the procession of monks parading down the main street, collecting their daily rice portions from the local residents and tourists who purchase a basket of rice with which to participate. Later on, a visit to the morning market. Over the course of two days we visited several villages and the Hmong market in town.
