Lab #2 Reflex, Control Charts, g

Class Assignment for Monday September 19, 2005: Confirm your proficiency with one dimensional kinematics. You might consider the MCAT questions in one of the links provided elsewhere on this site (via Word document download). In any case, the problems in the text should be adequate.

Briefly eview the trigonometry relations- Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines in the context of vectors (see Beuche or other sources). I will apply these in solving relative motion problems like determining the wind correction angle in flying an airplane at a constant true airspeed (speed relative to the air) while observing its track over the ground.

Laboratory #3 Assignment: Have fun with the interactive physics experiments on "ActivPhysics OnLine," an Addison-Wesley website for "University Physics" (link below). Part 1: Mechanics section 1.1 (5 parts) might be instructive.

Plan ahead. Laboratory #4 on Projectile Motion will involve at least a virtual experiment (link below).

PHY 151 Lab 1: Measurement and Density

The Excel spreadsheet below is set up for a worse case error analysis of the error propagated in the calculation of density from the errors in measurement of the mass and dimensions of the block, cylinder, and sphere on worksheets 1, 2, and 3; resp.

density comparison worksheet

PHY 151 Lab 4: Projectile Motion

Analyze the projectile data in the Excel spreadsheet below. An object is fired from a spring loaded device a height H = 1 meter above the floor at various angles. The corresponding range (horizontal distance to point of impact) is tabulated. (Also complete the pre-lab you received).

Centripetal Motion Lab: work the following problem:

Use the balance of forces to calculate the orbital velocity of the Earth in miles per hour. Assume a circular orbit around the Sun and no other gravitational influence such as from the Moon or Jupiter. You should be able to find the necessary parameters. Some of them be the mean distance to the Sun, relevant masses, universal constants in your physics textbook.

Ch 252 organic chemistry students, download the Excel spreadsheet for the UV/VIS Spectroscopy experiment. You may edit and use this information to generate your own spreadheet.
