GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tue April 18, 2006: Friends of Science lecture: "Moon Over Boston: The Dawning of the American Revolution" is a blend of history, literaature, and science. It describes the profound impact of astronomical events on the covert activities of the patriots. Analysis of Longfellow's poem, "Paul Revere's Ride," together with historical documents, including the HMS Somerset ship logs, reveal insights that punctuate the significance of their achievement. (7 pm Hiwassee College auditorium in the BLC Bldg.).

Sun April 16, 2006: Join the Sweetwater community for a short Easter sunrise service (6 am) by the three crosses at the Memorial Gardens cemetary (Hwy 11 heading north out of town). I have the privelege of sharing a poignant poem.

Wed April 5, 2006: NOTICE CHANGE OF SCHEDULE my lecture to the Orion (a science and astronomy club) in Oak Ridge Community Center. "The Impact of Science Fiction on Science" has been postponed to a later date to be announced.
Instead, Professor Igor Alexeff will speak on "Plama Physics for Dummies" at 7 pm in the Oak Ridge Civic Center on the Oakridge Turnpike slightly northeast of Illinois Ave. For more information contact orionridge at att dot net. Note that the words "at" and "dot" have been added, as well as extra spaces, to thwart spamming robots).

Sat April 1, 2006: I will present a lecture at the Power Teaching Conference at Roane State Community College (Harriman Campus): "Discovering Astronomy Through Poetry." Abstract: Poetry can be effectively used in any educational setting, but the sciences, and in particular Astronomy, will be emphasized here. Examples are taken from ancient, classical, modern periods as well as from my published “contemporary” astronomy-related poetry. (Though there is overlap with the previous lecture, it is considerably diffeent).

Fri March 31, 2006: I will speak at 7:30 pm at the TN Spring Star Party (Fri March 31- Sun April 2), Fall Creek Falls State Park on "Astronomy- The Other Liberal Art". It is an interesting blend of history, literature and astronomy. An abbreviated astronomical analysis of several examples of the modern poetry of Frost, Longfellow and others reveals a significant appreciation of astronomy, and in some cases, shows its the profound effect on historical events. Similarly, examples from Classical Greek and ancient Hebrew literature provide interesting historical and astronomical insights. Finally, contemporary free verse by the author is used to teach astronomical nuances of the planets. (See http://personal.bna.bellsouth.net/s/p/spsmith/TSSP2006.htm for more information to the free star party and the optional lodging/meals package).
