In 1850, seven Lyles households lived close together in the western part of the Pickens District (now Oconee County), South Carolina. Our William Albert Lyles family was one of them. How was our Lyles family related to those other Lyleses? It's a puzzle. |
|
We have noticed quite a few strong connections between William A. Lyles and the elder Joseph Lyles (1792-1870), and we think that this Joseph Lyles might be the missing father of William Lyles. But there is also some evidence that this Joseph Lyles had no children. So we wonder--who was Joseph Lyles? Below are the seven Lyles families listed in the 1850 Federal Census, the first one to name each member of households.
The census takers numbered the houses in the order that that visited them, so in the list below the "house visited" numbers give an excellent idea of who was living next to whom. Also in the list below my notation not literate signifies that the person is older than 20 and not literate. The census listed occupations, though not always, for those over 15.
