Saw a link to this and thought it was interesting. Although if I'd had to read Ulysses to graduate from high school, I think I'd still be back at my alma mater!

Teen Thrillers!

Here's the cover for Red Is for Remembrance: Books, a fabulous-sounding teen thriller from Laurie Faria Stolarz:

As a kid (and still now!) I gobbled up anything that sounded even slightly thrillerish. And these books (Red is for Remembrance and the others in the series) look like they are right up my alley!

Here's a bit more info if you're as intrigued as I am:

From the Publisher:

"I Know You're Alone."
Nothing has been the same for eighteen-year-old Stacey since her boyfriend Jacob died. For months she stayed at the beach cottage they shared before Jacob's tragic accident, refusing to give up hope that somehow, somewhere, Jacob was still alive. But Stacey knows she can't put off rejoining the world forever. Lucky to have a full scholarship to prestigious Beacon University, Stacey hopes she can finally put her past behind her. Trying to get through her first week of college as just another normal student, Stacey is devastated when she starts having more disturbing dreams. And keeping them secret is not an option when the college president calls her in for a private meeting-and reveals that his daughter Porsha is having nightmares too. But while Stacey dreams of a ghost, Porsha is dreaming of a murder she's convinced hasn't happened yet. Porsha's fragmented nightmares foretell a brutal murder, and may also shed light on a shocking revelation that could change Stacey's life forever. Together the two must decode their dark dreams to save a life – a risk that may cost them their own.

Sentence increased for Sex Offender

FOXNews.com - U.S. & World News - Vt. Judge Ups Controversial Sentence for Sex Offender: "A controversial ruling for a sex offender in Vermont was changed Thursday from 60 days to 3 to 10 years after a judge received pressure to extend the punishment."

I blogged about this a few entries ago. Very glad to see the sentence has been reconsidered!

Diana Lively is Falling Down: Books

Diana Lively is Falling Down by Sheila Curran is a book that I bought when it first came out because it just sounds so fabulous! (Alas, it's still on my TBR pile, but that's not dig on the book. Pretty much everything is still in my TBR pile. That, alas, is the curse of being a writer.) At any rate, I'm thrilled to have the chance to give the book a plug!

Here's a bit about the book:

Diana Lively is Falling Down WILL DELIGHT MOTHERS WHO THINK,
AND THOSE WHO VOW TO THINK, IF THEY COULD ONLY FIND THE TIME

Diana Lively is a talented British architect who builds dollhouses so she can tend to her three children and overbearing husband. Stranded in an unhappy marriage by what she perceives as her children’s best interests, Diana must find a way to reclaim her power while holding fast to duty, honor and housewifely sanity. When an Arizona tycoon enters Oxford’s gated halls with the offer of a year in America, Diana’s world is turned upside down and inside out, with surprising effects.

This comic, intelligent and entertaining novel spotlights the ways in which nurturing can come from the most unlikely sources and achieve the most unexpected outcomes. Ultimately, this novel retrieves motherhood from the dust bin of roles taken-for-granted and catapults it into a sphere of influence all its own. At the same time, the plot consistently counters stereotypical notions of maternal devotion. After reading this book, which links mother-love to respect for Nature, the Earth-embedded bumper stickers proclaiming Love Your Mother will suddenly seem both perfectly reasonable and patently obvious.

Here's some praise:

Beautifully detailed and rich in exceptional characterization, Curran's novel
gently reminds readers that fantasy has a place in everyone's life. Uniquely uplifting and never didactic, this is a gem.

“BOOKLIST,” Starred Review

DIANA LIVELY IS FALLING DOWN is a terrific pick-me-up. You couldn't find two more disparate landscapes than Oxford, England and Arizona, and that's exactly what one British woman discovers when she crosses the Pond to find herself a fish-out-of-water -- only to realize that for the first time in her life, this means she can stand on her own two feet. Filled with characters who make you laugh out loud even as they break your heart, this is a funny, warm, inventive, original book.
Jodi Picoult, NYT bestselling author of VANISHING ACTS, and MY SISTER’S KEEPER

Brilliant, touching, and funny as hell, Diana Lively packs a powerful punch. A poignant and biting satire... this spirited romp through an Englishwoman's Arizona deserves a unique place of honor on any bookshelf... Wry, engaging, and wise beyond words, Diana is bound to delight and amaze. Carlos Eire, 2003 National Book Award winner for WAITING FOR SNOW IN HAVANA

Captivating, fast-paced, no-holds-barred storytelling, Diana Lively is Falling Down defies pigeon-holing. Wrestling the complexities of motherhood, loss and betrayal, politics, the environment, and theme parks, it is at once intimate, domestic, and worldly. A debut to celebrate! Julianna Baggott GIRLTALK, THE MISS AMERICA FAMILY, THE MADAM

And a bit about the author

The writer, Sheila Curran, is a mother, faculty wife, writer and giver of dinner parties. In her career as a trailing spouse, she’s observed the ways in which one’s identity can change and shift, depending on random circumstance and networks of support from family and friends. Her husband, who is not at all like the villain in this novel, is an accomplished writer, gardener and cook. The couple and their children have lived in England, Arizona, Boston, New York, Chicago, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, and Ohio.

The Manolo Matrix - Another Great Review!

The Manolo Matrix "ith her ability to build the thrills and chills to a climatic crescendo, Ms. Kenner keeps the action hot, tense, and very unnerving as Jennifer and Devlin race against the clock and a gun-toting villain."

Yay!

And we wonder why faith in the judicial system is failing ...

The Story

Judge Edward Cashman is coming under fire for sentencing a child rapist to 60 days. The rapist, Mark Hulett, admitted to raping a little girl countless times from age 7 to age 10.

Let me repeat that so you don't miss it --- he sentenced him to SIXTY FREAKING DAYS. Sixty. That's all. Two months. For raping a child.

Certainly there are excellent judges on the bench, but with judges like Cashman handing down such ridiculous sentences (and stating for the record that he no longer believes in punishment), is it any wonder that the public looks askance at judges and the judicial system?

I am astounded, saddened, and mortified. And my heart goes out to the family of that little girl.

The Manolo Matrix -- "Forget the Da Vinci Code"

Got a great review of THE MANOLO MATRIX at The Eternal Night Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Web Site. "Forget The DaVinci Code; this is much more fun, more clever, engaging, intriguing, and far less likely to start an argument." I gotta say, that really made me smile!

How Folks Find My Website

Ask Jeeves Results - pictures of the nose after years of doing coke

Every once in a while, I check my webcounter stats to see what sorts of queries are leading people to my site. Today, this query showed up.

"Pictures of the Nose after Years of Doing Coke."

Um, yeah. Whatever.

But this led some poor soul to the Carpe Demon page on my website because of the reference to 1492 PICTURES and YEARS of DOING THE MOMMY THING.

But, hey, hits are hits. right?

Top Pick for THE MANOLO MATRIX!

Romantic Times BOOKclub Magazine: romance book reviews, romance novels, romance authors Yay! RT gave THE MANOLO MATRIX a Top Pick! I haven't seen the actual review yet, though!

go horns!

The University of Texas at Austin - Web Central

Okay, yes, I usually say that I have no interest in football (and, really, I don't have much!). But even I couldn't help but be caught up in the excitement of this game. (Primarily because my husband is bounding around the living room, and that's just hard to ignore).

At any rate, Hook 'Em Horns! It really was a pretty cool win!

And congratulations!

So. How many headlines tomorrow will say that UT is "inVINCEable"?

Andi Buchanan ... truly a super mom!

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about being a mom and what that means in general and what that means to me personally. Big issues like education and parenting and the fascinating little tidbits about watching a kid grow up. (Fascinating in both a good – like C's excitement as she's learning to read – and bad – like the ohmygosh tantrum we experienced this evening -- way. About that tantrum. Wow. A doozy. And from a kid who rarely throws them. Overall, I guess we're blessed, but whoa, Nellie!).

Anyhoo, it's appropriate that this week I'm hosting Author Andi Buchanan, who is, honestly a total Super Mom, imho. She runs the highly entertaining Mothershock blog -- visit it at http://www.mothershock.com/blog/. (Her current post talks about how she's had laundry in the washing machine for four days. Can I just say that YES, I can beat that record. I'm not sure if I'm proud or pathetic ...). She also has oodles of books coming out or on the shelves. Here's a list for your perusing pleasure:

Mother Shock: Loving Every (Other) Minute of It Mother Shock: Loving Every (Other) Minute of It (Seal Press, 2003) click here

It’s a Boy: Women Writers on Raising Sons (Seal Press, Nov. 2005) click here

Literary Mama: Reading for the Maternally Inclined (Seal Press, Jan. 2006) click here

Impressive much, yes?

She'll be be doing readings/appearances for IT'S A BOY and LITERARY MAMA in Seattle: Sunday, January 8, 2005, 3:00 pm Queen Anne bookstore, 1811 Queen Anne Ave; Monday, January 9, 7:00 pm Third Place Books, 1717 Bothel Way, Lake Forest Park, WA; and in Oakland, CA: Thursday Jan 12, 7:30 pm Diesel, 5433 College Avenue; I'll be doing Mother Talks in Seattle at 7:30 on Jan. 10, in San Francisco at 7:30 on Jan. 13, and in Sacramento at 4:30 on Jan. 14

Nobody But You - cover art sketches

NOBODY BUT YOU is one of my favorites of my books. A campy, fast-paced romantic-comedy mystery, it has all the elements I love when reading a romantic comedy or seeing a romantic movie. Thus ends the commercial. The reason I'm blogging is that the artist who did the FABULOUS cover art for NBY (click the link if you don't believe me!) graciously offered to GIVE me the cover art! How is that for generous?? And even more generous, he agreed to let me post it on my website. I haven't managed to post on the site yet, but will at my next update. Meanwhile, I'm posting the sketches and working bits here. I think it's fascinating seeing the various concepts that were submitted.

The artist is Hubert de Lartigue, a French artist with an impressive catalogue. Here's a link to a website of his work: The Pin-Up Files

And, without further ado, here's the first four images I scanned. More to come tomorrow!
