A Bad Boy Can Be Good For A Girl

Check out this fab-sounding release from debut author Tanya Lee Stone!

Why are so many women attracted to the “bad” boy? You know him—you went to high school with one, and maybe were involved with that boy yourself. He’s the golden boy, maybe a star athlete, and always in the “in” crowd. And he is BAD with a capital B. But can being involved with the wrong guy end up being good for you? In this provocative debut novel, Tanya Lee Stone explores this idea and takes an honest look at love and sex. A Bad Boy Can Be Good for a Girl is the story of three very different girls and their relationships with one bad boy.

I asked Tanya my now-standard questions ... check out her answers!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL 'WRITING DAY"?

I generally write or do writing-related things between 9 and 2 every day. I'm also known to leap out of bed either very late or night or very early in the morning. That seems to be the time I most often have those moments where something falls into place--I figure out what to do with a certain plot point that was bothering me, or I understand a character better.

DO YOU RECALL THE KERNEL OF INSPIRATION FOR THIS BOOK?

Yes, quite clearly. The title came to me first. I was sitting in a short-story workshop and listening to someone talk about submissions needed for an anthology with a theme of "bad boys." I took out my notebook and wrote "a bad boy can be good for a girl" across the page, and started writing that afternoon. The title posed so many questions for me, and Josie's voice came next, so I went with it from there.

PICK A CHARACTER IN THE BOOK AND TELL US WHAT TRAIT YOU SHARE (OR COME CLOSEST TO SHARING) WITH THAT CHARACTER.

I'm probably closest to Josie in that I had a strong sense of who I was at a very young age even though I tested the waters like everyone else.

IF YOU WERE STUCK ON A DESERT ISLAND, WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE A MAGICAL TRUNK THAT GAVE YOU LIMITLESS BOOKS TO READ, OR A LIMITLESS SUPPLY OF PAPER ON WHICH TO WRITE?

Paper, most definitely. Reading would only allow me to immerse myself in other people's ideas. Writing would give me the freedom to continue exploring my own ideas and in that, there is hope and possibilities. I imagine those are the things you need most while stuck on a desert island!

BEER OR WINE?

Red, red wine.

CHOCOLATE OR VANILLA?

Oh I could do a whole Forrest Gump thing on chocolate! Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, caramel-filled, pretzel-enrobed, chocolate-covered mint, chocolate espresso beans, chocolate malt balls, dark chocolate almond bark, I'll spare you the rest!

WHAT'S YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE BOOK?

Just one?! Say it isn't so! Someone asked me this recently and I went through the process of narrowing it down in my mind and came to Jane Eyre. But Wuthering Heights, The Great Gatsby, and a well-worn anthology of magical realist fiction I've had since high school are close to my heart.

Me again! Sounds like fun, huh? And I'm right there with Tanya on the red, red wine!
