Just finished Rafael Sabatini’s 1922 book Captain Blood and enjoyed
it. Yes, Blood’s exploits resemble those of Henry Morgan; and yes the book is
almost cliché, but it was enjoyable. The reader would benefit by first reading
Stephen Talty’s 2007 book Empire of Blue Water. Talty writes a biography
of the life of Morgan, giving historical background information. Thus Talty will
explain the difference between a buccaneer and a pirate as well as shed some light on the finely drawn the line between pirate
and privateer. There are some major differences between Blood and Morgan. The first being Morgan was not a good sea captain, he was a good military leader. Blood appears to be a creditable sailor, though not as great a Jack Aubrey of Patrick
O’Brien fame. Blood has a serious romantic interest, Morgan did not. Morgan was always considered legitimate while Blood was not so luck.
All-in-all, if you are interested in sea stories, Captain Blood is worth your time.
