Ah sweet mystery of life . . . . . but really ! This is one of those
"but who are these guys ?" Following are a number of R & B vocal
groups whose history is hard to come by because of a dearth of
information about their personnel and recording dates and songs. The
usual sources have mostly been without much more to go on except
various record releases and approximate dates of such. So - what
follows is my "did you ever hear of a group called . . . . . .
."
Blue Dots - recorded for the DeLuxe label in 1954 with four records.
Bombers - recorded for the little known Orpheus label in late 1955-early 56.
Chanteclairs - in 1954 put out two sides for Randy Woods Dot label.
Cherokees - Peacock Records in 1954
Clefftones - (yes 2 "f"s) recorded four sides for Old Town in 1955
Jeanette Baker & The Dots - three sides for the Caddy label 1956-57
Earls - two records for the Gem label in 1954
Five Cats - 1954 on RCA Victor
Five Scalders - two sides for Drummond in 1956
Five Wings - a pair of releases for King Records in 1955
Four Bills - recorded for Gem and Bell records in 1953
Four Blues - early sides for Apollo in 1950
Four Cruisers - recorded for Chess in 1953
Gales - two sides for Detroit's JVB records in 1955.
Gentlemen - Apollo Records group in 1954-55
Gypsies - Groove records group in 1955
Honeybears - three sides for Leiber-Stoller's Spark label in 1954-55
Normanaires - recorded for MGM Records in 1953.
Persians - briefly on Capitol in 1955
Plants - mainstay of J & S Records in 1957
Quails - recorded five records for DeLuxe all in 1954.
Roamers - Savoy Records group with four releases in 1955.
Scholars - recorded for Cue, Dot, and Imperial labels in 1956-57.
Topps - Red Robin group from 1954.
Whispers - recorded two sides for Philly's Gotham label in 1954.
