The Gear I’ve Had (That I Let Get Away)

(© 2007 Charlie Jaffe)

Oh, the gear I’ve had that I let get away

I wish I still had it to play today

Guitars and basses, pedals and amps

I think of them often and my eyes get damp

An Epiphone Sorrento from Kalamazoo

Had the soul of a Gibson all the way through

That sweet ’67 was so tuneful and nice

I liked it so much that I once bought it twice

A New York made Olympic; an old '44

I got rid of that one to make room for more

Oh, the gear I’ve had that I let get away

I wish I still had it to play today

A two pickup natural Fender D’Aquisto

The wood was so figured, good lord, it was mint!

I thought I would bebop for a very brief stint

A ‘burst ’72 Strat with maple neck so fat

I played it for years and then sold it like that!

A three bolt plate and a bullet in its head

Even with new frets that axe was just dead

Oh, the gear I’ve had that I let get away

I wish I still had it to play today

A cherry SG Jr. circa 1964

The nickel vibrato made me want to play more

That single P-90, oh how it screamed

Notes just jumped out and it played like a dream

The ‘69 ES-335 TDW that I played for years

My favorite electric, its memory brings tears

A funky mahogany MK-35

That Mark Series job was a ‘75

And the heaviest guitar that I ever owned?

A ’72 Deluxe, its weight made me groan!

Oh, the gear I’ve had that I let get away

I wish I still had it to play today

A white, mid-Sixties Hagstrom SG-shaped bass

Had its original plush tiger-striped case

A couple of Harmonys were really quite nifty

Both Montereys, both from the Sixties

And a couple of Ricks, yes a couple of Ricks!

A Jetglo 450, a tin covered SD6

The cresting wave solid was ’63-‘64

The Forties lap steel had a Lucite fretboard

Oh, the gear I’ve had that I let get away

I wish I still had it to play today

Oh how I desire guitars with twelve strings

A whole different breed, they make my heart sing

A mid-Sixties Gibson B25-12 was the first I did own

A beat up old Guild with orchestral tone

It’s outrageous how they made a grown man moan

Oh, the gear I’ve had that I let get away

I wish I still had it to play today

An original Tube Screamer in bright seasick green

A Reverberocket so good it was totally obscene!

A great ’55 Pro was my main gigging amp

At home I played a blackface Vibro Champ

Oh, the gear I’ve had that I let get away

I wish I still had it to play today

Some went in trades, others paid bills

Some pieces are gone ‘cause I just had my fill

Still…

Oh, the gear I’ve had that I let get away

I wish I still had it to play today

Guitars and basses, pedals and amps

I think of them often and my eyes get damp

Schleppin’

(Sung to the tune of Truckin’ by the Grateful Dead; © 1970, Ice Nine Publishing. New lyrics by Charlie Jaffe, Passover 2000/5760)

Schleppin’ to the Promised Land

40 years across the desert sand

It takes time to get where you’re goin’

You just keep schleppin’ on!

Baby Moses floated in the Nile

His people were slaves for quite a while

Passover, under, around and through

We were freed by God and by a Jew

Big Moses said, “Let my people go!”

God sent 10 plagues to Pharaoh so

The ancient Hebrews could live and be free

10 commandments for you and the same 10 for me

I love the bread of affliction, my addiction

If I eat it dry or in a brye it’s so fine

Made on the run, baked on rocks in sunshine

With butter ’n salt, good Lord it gets me by

Schleppin’ to the Promised Land

40 years across the desert sand

It takes time to get where you’re goin’

You just keep schleppin’ on!

Miriam’s Cup, Elijah, manna from heaven

Matzah is flat; it doesn’t have time to leaven

Kosher wine, a piece of gefilte fish

The Seder plate’s a really original dish

(bridge) With an outstretched arm God parted the sea

And we were delivered from slavery

Lately it occurs to me

What a long, strange schlep it’s been

Four questions, afikomen too

Whoa, whoa, baby, we are free to be Jews

The Seder is a happening meal

‘Cause we’re not slaves and that’s a really big deal

Schleppin’ to the Promised Land

40 years across the desert sand

It takes time to get where you’re goin’

You just keep schleppin’ on!

I first met the band at a press conference on my birthday in 1979. Three of the group weren't there, that's why the photo is missing their signatures. It was the day after jazz great Charles Mingus passed away in Mexico. Phil was distraught and didn't attend the press conference. He was consoled by his good friend Mickey. According to Keith, Donna was at the dentist having some teeth pulled.

Love Me, I’m a Liberal

Words and music by Phil Ochs, copyright, 1966

(New lyrics by Charlie Jaffe, 2004)

I cried when a shot killed John Lennon

He sang about peace from his bed

If kids today don't sing in protest

The draft will see them all dead

And me, I scream every morning

"This president's twisting my head!"

So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

The last 40 odd years have been crazy

With Kennedy, Nixon and wars

There's Clinton and Carter and Reagan

Gerry Ford was oh, such a bore

LBJ escalated our involvement

Bush One hosted the first Gulf War

So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

So proudly I voted for Carter

His peanuts and charm were fresh air

The outlook was bright for our nation

We'd settled the Watergate affair

Dick Nixon lied to the country

And said that his hair was still fair

So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

When Ronnie moved in to the White House

The greatest role of his life

He courted Latin American strongmen

And nobody cared for his wife

His Star Wars was just a pipe dream

He single-handedly tore down a wall

So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

The first Bush was nothing so special

Iranians, Contras and such

He loved the royal Saud family

But he didn't like Saddam so much

He went to war, TV in primetime

And Death lost its human touch

So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Now, Bubba, he loved the young ladies

His policies, pretty much sound

We experienced growth of our nation

Cigars were passed all around

He played with them daily in briefings

They impeached him for fooling around

(technically, for lying under oath)

So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Supreme Court robbed the 2000 voters

Brother Jeb is a good ol' boy

Civil liberties falling by wayside

Dick Cheney is playing with toys

A junta is running our nation

They're dastardly through to the core

So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

W acts paranoiac

Won't swear under oath to the truth

His cronies have sworn to renew him

By rigging the voting booths

Let's lose Halliburton for certain

Earn back our standing right now

So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Liberals work for the people

Let's win a majority now

We'll take back the House and the Senate

Give back Iraq its cash cow

Let's beat Bush again in November

John Kerry is smarter, and how!

So love me, love me, love, I'm a liberal!
