I've divided my Jamestown cards into three
sections to make them a bit
more manageable. Jamestown views are named for street addresses.
This section consists of Jamestown's
government buildings and various institutions (churches, hospitals,
hotels, schools, etc.).
Jamestown, New York is
in the most southwestern county of the state: Chautauqua.
One
of the most prominent features of the county is the long narrow Lake
Chautauqua
that runs roughly northwest to southeast.
What
follows
is
not a Chamber of Commerce view of the city. Rather, it is the
result
of collecting of photos, postcards, and history by an
ex-patriate.
There is no attempt to gloss over Jamestown's problems that are evident
in some of the views you will see. A home town is like a
family:
you care about it in spite of any shortcomings that you see.
Several
Jamestowners
have gained national fame: Lucille Ball, Roger Tory Peterson,
Natalie
Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs, Irv Noren. Here's where many of them
grew up.
There's an interesting section on the
Trolley Restoration Project page that shows Jamestown's earliest
schools.
