This is a continuation of our kitchen renovation log. On the previous page we took you from the first sledge hammer tearing down the walls to the windows being installed. We started on August 28th. It is now November 4th. We are over the hump!

11/1

I worked every night this past week because I won't be able to work this weekend. I removed the sink and finished the wiring and framing in that area. Put in Polly's recessed cabinet where the old sink use to be as well. I also worked one full night on preparing for the electrical inspector. Inspector was just here and we are good to go.

Bad news is that we still have not seen the plumber. Something keeps coming up and they can't make it. They are going to have to stay ahead of me because the walls are going up! Starting Monday!

P.S. We are having a "Raising the Ceiling" party next Saturday, Nov. 9th, 10 am to Noon. Chili will be Served!

Old Sink Area - New Recessed Cabinet

11/3

Got Busy and wired the kitchen for sound today and insulated. Plumber MUST show up this week. I can't move until they show up. My plan is to follow them around the room with walls this week.

We implanted our "Time Capsule" today in return for the items that we found in the walls. We included a Labatt's beer can, an AOL disk, a MacDonald's toy and an article about the 9/11 1st anniversary from the paper.

11/6

I guess we have given up on the plumber. It is quite frustrating. We have decided to be proactive about it and do most of the work ourselves. Hell, It will save us some money too. I am a pretty good plumber myself and I can at least reroute the old plumbing and put in the supply lines to the sink and clothes washer. I have friends who can help with the drain and vent and we will just wait for the plumber for the gas line. Tonight I rerouted the hot water and cut that out from where the old sink was. Tomorrow I will do the same for the cold.

11/7

Well, guess who showed up tonight! Right, the Plumber. He will be doing the vent and drain on Saturday morning while we put up the ceiling. I am still going to do the supplies myself however. Tonight I finished rerouting the old plumbing and we are good to go on one wall. Jim and I will put that wall up after the ceiling Saturday.

Goals for this weekend;

  • Ceiling
  • Wall
  • Vent and Drain (plumber)
  • Supply lines to sink

Goals for Month

  • All walls up
  • All plumbing in
  • Floor sanded and refinished

11/9

Ceiling party went very well and fast! Thanks to Dave, Kris, Ray and Jim, our wall skinning team, we not only did the ceiling but two walls! As a special bonus, the Plumbers were here all day and put in the drain, vent and even the gas line! What a day!

Alan and Dad in the crawl space. New supply above our heads.

11/10

Wow - are we moving now! Jim and I did the supply to the clothes washer and sink today. We now have a working sink in the kitchen (even though it is temporary.) Jocelyn and I also did a layer of compound on the walls after dinner.

Our new (temporary) sink! It actually works!

11/11

Here is where we are so far. Today I finished putting up all the walls and the first round of compound is laid. The next few pictures are a testament to our very productive weekend.

Brae Loch In - Cazenovia NY

11/16

We took a well deserved break this weekend and retired to the Brae Loch Inn in Cazenovia NY to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We had the "Adam and Eve" room complete with jacuzzi. Special thanks to the Case Clan for arranging for the champagne and cheese plate waiting for us. We did lots of shopping, eating and sleeping (that's my story and I am sticking to it!) This week did not go by however without work. I spent two late nights sanding the walls, priming the ceiling, cutting out the heating vent and putting up some bead board. We are still aiming for our goal of cooking Christmas dinner in our new kitchen. We are on schedule!

11/20

We got right back to work after our trip. Last night I primed the walls and painted the ceiling. We then put up all the ceiling lights and turned on the lighting circuit. One circuit up and running. Tonight we went ahead and painted the walls. Starting tomorrow we begin with the floor by finally tearing up the old linoleum. It has been useful up until now for protection and even a drop cloth. I have a floor sander reserved for the weekend.

Polly is getting excited now!

11/24

The floor is sanded and stained. I spent 12 hours sanding the floor yesterday. We just could not get all of the old glue stains off because of some depressions in the floor. We were upset at first and started thinking about just painting the floor but our daughter, Jocelyn talked us into trying to stain it and see what happens. We wanted a distressed look anyway and we were pleased with the result. This floor has character! Thanksgiving is this week and I will be staying home to polyurethane the floor and get some appliances back into the kitchen. Currently we have the refrigerator in the living room, the stove on the porch and the washer and dryer in the garage.

12/01

Floor is done. Stackable washer/dryer is in as well as the oven. Started on the trim and put in some outlets. The big jobs this weekend were filling up the dumpster with the old kitchens and a trip to Lowes again. This time for the sink, faucet and over the range microwave.

Cabinets come in Dec. 12th.

Last push!

  • finish trim
  • paint trim
  • cabinets
  • countertop
  • install microwave, sink and dishwasher
  • Christmas dinner!
