Could someone please check the 1850 Caddo
Parish census record for Joseph Ratley (or any Ratley's...there
shouldn't be many). He should be abt 55yrs old and his wife was Ann(a)
Arrington Ratley. He died in Caddo Parish 1853 so I'm hoping he was
there by 1850 census.
Thank you very much for your time and effort!

Subject: Rufus Yanc(e)y Graves, Col. CSA.
My name is Jerome Dwight Glass, Sr. My Fathers' name was Rufus Clinton
Glass, He was born in Shreveport, La. His Mothers' name was Kate Graves.
Her Mothers' name was Lizzie Graves (Lyles), Her daughters' names were
Martha, Nina, Lizzie, Mary, Kate and Annie Marie. The father of these
children is believed to be Rufus Graves, a plantation owner in
Caddo Parish.
Upon my Fathers' death, two years ago, I began to search for my heritage
on his side. He would never speak much of his people or his background,
I remember as a child that he told me I was related to Colonel Rufus
Yancy Graves of the Confederate Army. (In other words, I grew up
believing I was a purely WHITE child) When I found otherwise the only
reason it blew my socks off was the thought that I had missed out on a
whole lifetime of not knowing the other side of my family.
Since his death I have, somewhat, discovered the other side of my family
that I never knew I had but even they are lacking in information about
Rufus Graves or his wife?, Lizzie Graves.
Lizzie Graves is reputed and looks (from photograph at age 76) to have
African and AmerInd blood.
Any information you could point me to (on the Internet) would be very
helpful.

Subject: DESESSART
I'm doing my mother's family genealogy, & it's virtually all based in
various areas of LA. Fairly recently, I made a discovery which has been
something of a shock to my entire family--my g-g-grandmother was mulatto.
This has added such a rich aspect to my search, as well as being quite
challenging. I've come up against brick walls time & time again in
trying to trace my specific line of what apparently was a well-known, &
somewhat well-respected, family in S. LA in the mid-1800s. I know that
there was a definite Caucasian strain to the family name--Desessart--but
there were also a number of mulattos, as well. I can trace the white
lineage to some degree; I can't get a handle on the mulatto side.
Thanks!
